Historia
On a hot summer night, a watchful neighbor locks eyes with an intruder and unwittingly alerts the police to a vicious crime scene next door: a lavish master bedroom where a man lies dead. Next to him, his wife is bleeding out onto the hardwood floor, clinging to life. The victim, Adam Grant, was a well-known San Francisco prosecutor - a man whose connection to Homicide detective Valerie Hart brings her face-to-face with a life she’s long since left behind. Adam’s career made him an easy target, and forensic evidence points towards an ex-con he put behind bars years ago.

Not as good as first two
Revisado: 01-23-25
I have 3 hours left, it's been hard to get into. The self-loathing and explicit sex in the first two were often unnecessary to include but hey it's human. This book, it seems way to excessive. Valerie hasn't grown at all as a character, to the point where I think *I* need a shrink to handle her problems. Every time the murder mystery is on a good beat it derails into 10 or 15 minutes of Valerie self-hating monologuing or other self-destructive behavior. I like the author and will finish this title, but I won't pursue the Valerie Hart series any further.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

How will it end??
Revisado: 08-16-24
I am only halfway through, but wondering how it will end. If you know Stephen King, you'll be prepared for the supernatural twists and turns in the plot. Regarding the review on the narrators female voice- the character of Holly is a great callback to the Mr Mercedes trilogy, her voice was the same in that story, stilted and monotone, it matches her character; Will Patton also narrates those so it was a fun nod to the story for.me.

Historia
When she's called to the murder scene, the last thing San Francisco Homicide detective Valerie Hart is expecting is for Katherine Glass to walk back into her life. Six years earlier, revulsion and fascination had gripped the nation in equal measure, as beautiful, intelligent, charming—and utterly evil—Katherine Glass had been convicted on six counts of Murder One. But the freshly-mutilated corpse in the ground-floor apartment bears all the hallmarks of Katherine's victims. And then there's the note, with its chilling implications. Addressed to Valerie.

Deus Ex Machina
Revisado: 04-04-24
Overall I liked the story, it kept my interest. I feel like the story had a lot of filler in some spots, notably any conversation involving Squash or Jailhouse Visits. These were done to flesh out the characters, yes, but man they could have done the work with half the time. Any direct conversation with Katherine Glass made me want to gouge out my own eye, the character was insufferable, but as she would say, I digress. The whole thing wrapped up in the last 22 minutes very quickly and abruptly thanks to the well-placed Deus Ex Machina. I would like to hear more Valerie Hart stories but if the ending of this suggests the plot of the next one, I'll pass on it. Worth the credit and a good continuation from this author.

Author didn't miss a beat, picked right up seamlessly from the prior title. Same narrator was great for consistency between books. Jamie's luck seems a little far fetched in this one, but it kept me guessing

Historia
Wounds is a confounding, strange, and utterly entrancing collection of six stories, including one new novella from Shirley Jackson Award-winning author Nathan Ballingrud. From the eerie dread descending upon a New Orleans dive bartender after a cell phone is left behind in a rollicking bar fight in The Visible Filth to the search for the map of hell in “The Butcher’s Table”, Ballingrud’s beautifully crafted stories are riveting in their quietly terrifying depictions of the murky line between the known and the unknown.

I must be desensitized
Revisado: 01-29-24
wasn't as gory and horror-filled as it was made out to be, but it was still a great read. The stories seem a little disjointed until you figure out that they are all related somehow. The final story sets the groundwork for the first 5. I enjoyed it and will be looking for more work from this author.

Historia
Every town needs a hero, and Detective Cal Farrell fits the bill. He stopped an active shooter six months earlier, and now he’s become the darling of the Alexandria press. The problem is that Cal remembers nothing from that day. He’s working with a psychiatrist to recover his memories, but hasn’t had much luck. Then, on one of his morning runs, he is once again the first on scene for a grisly discovery—a body hanging impossibly high on a tree. Soon there’s another victim, killed by a blade and dumped in a ravine.

kept me guessing
Revisado: 12-13-23
I agree with one of the other reviewers, that the breathy hushed voice of the narrator was initially off-putting but I warmed up to it. The story kept me invested and, yes, there were some grotesque descriptors, but if you are used to reading true crime or police procedurals it's nothing too out of the ordinary. Don't forget that the world isn't all sunshine and rainbows...these monsters exist in the real world and not just in the imagination of the author. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the drama of a TV Detective series, but with content bumped up to "MA" for Mature audiences. The character development was on point and I felt for the victims and it made me feel that much more excited to see how the villians would see their demise, whether it was through death or justice. Looking forward to trying more books from this author.

Keeps you in suspense
Revisado: 11-30-23
Having 2 kids that match the age and relationship dynamic of the two main characters, some parts were hard to get through. But the story kept my interest all the way till the end, with the last 2 hours in particular making me wonder "how is it going to end??" Nothing about this story is predictable and there are many twists and turns that are going to make you pay even more attention. Definitely seeking more titles from this author!

Historia
Magnus "Steps" Craig is part of the elite three-man Special Tracking Unit of the FBI. Called in on special cases where his skills are particularly needed, he works as a tracker. The media dubs him "The Human Bloodhound", since Steps is renowned for his incredible ability to find and follow trails over any surface better than anyone else. But there's a secret to his success. Steps has a special ability - a kind of synesthesia - where he can see the "essence" of a person, something he calls "shine", on everything they've touched.

The mantra of the FBI's Special Tracking Unit. I was glued to this story and it's setup in the end to the next title in the series. The author and narrator both kept me waiting for what's next in each chapter. Great first impression for my first time reading this author. 👍
