Dude!
Revisado: 06-17-24
The book, and series is mildly entertaining if you have time to kill, and can get it on sale, because, in no way is it worth full price, or even a credit. It feels a lot like a long running cartoon, as far as writing quality. There narrator does a pretty good job of making it more palatable than it would be if you were reading it yourself, I might have given her a 5 if it weren't for the constant mispronunciation of certain words. I don't remember it in the previous books, and maybe I just missed it, but the authors extreme over use of the word "Dude" left me feeling unreasonably violent towards surfers and valley girls. This dude, that dude, and some other dude 😎.

Pete is a simple man who enjoys a good drink amongst good friends. Not too much to ask, right? Now, he's trapped in a fantasy world far from home, stuck underground and inside the body of a smelly dwarf with fantastic facial hair. The worst part? The swill that the dwarves are falling all over themselves to drink. It's flat, it's watery, and it has the alcohol content of a rancid coconut. Can Pete save the dwarves from their own sour fate, or will he be forever doomed to plink his pickaxe away in hopes that he hits the motherlode?

Great Fun
Revisado: 05-20-24
This series is proof that a great story can be told without mass amounts of violence, and all around unpleasantness. The story is well written, and well delivered, and while you are left with a desire for more, you are not left with a heart stopping cliff hanger. This was a wonderful pour, ending in a beautiful sudsy head, and they didn't have to disconnect the car from the train to achieve it!!

Welcome to the Five Isles, where war has come in the name of the invading army of Sor Sevier, a merciless host driven by the prophetic fervor of the Angel Prince, Aeros, toward the last unconquered kingdom of Gul Kana. Yet Gault, one of the elite Knights Archaic of Sor Sevier, is growing disillusioned by the crusade he is at the vanguard of just as it embarks on his Lord Aeros' greatest triumph. While the eldest son of the fallen king of Gul Kana now reigns in ever increasing paranoid isolationism, his two sisters seek their own paths.

I have read thousands of books in the Fantasy genre. Why do so many authors believe that coming of age mean inept, sniveling, idiot who can't get out of their own head, or out of their own way? This has been done, many, many times. The wise men around them, never seem to see it coming, also, been done, many, many times. I will give give Durfee one thing though, he managed to blend the age old story with the Sociopathic tendencies of George R R Martin. As a reader, I know war is terrible, as a military veteran who has walked the battle field, I find those who fixate on the horror to be degenerate. The greatest story tellers know how to get their point across without wallowing in it like war mongering sociopaths. Congratulations, you also managed to wrap it around religious strife, cause that's new "insert eye roll here". I can't even say you did a good job world building, as all that was lost in the strife of it all. If you spent as much time on world building as you spend fixating on the look on a dead teenagers face, the world might unfold in the minds eye, but no, that was vomited out with the bowel spray that splattered my mind from some villager along the beach, yay!
Tim Gerald Reynolds was the only redeeming quality, but he lost a star in my book for reading this. You can't even count on your story telling heros. Oh well such is life.

Mind if I pull up this chair?
Revisado: 03-22-24
I started my journey a little over a year ago, after a near death experience that changed a lot of things for me, including the way I look at spirituality. Never picked up a deck in my life, and was far from sure how to go about it. I felt a deep need to go forward with it, yet so much was written as if everything was set in stone "This is how it is!" which just rubbed against my hatred off being told what to do and think. I chased this itch as far as a "Witches book shop many miles from where I live, and while trying to find answers (very few readers iI had asked up until that point wanted to help) I came across this book. The proprietor pushed me in a different direction, but I stuck to my guns, went with my gut and purchased this one. Turned out to be a great move. Melissa sucks you straight into her kitchen, and advises you on how to make your cards and your tarot, yours. No preaching, no fooling with your mind. This is who I am, this is how it is, take it or leave it. I don't agree with her on all things, but I go to her kitchen table for answers firsts before I go any where else. Thank you for letting me pull up a chair. 🪑 😀 !!

Epic failure of a main character.
Revisado: 09-08-22
How can you tell such a good story, but have such an epic failure of a main character? I haven't even finished and I am really disappointed in Cobble. When a reader, who isn't that intelligent, can figure out what is about to happen, doesn't know any more than the main character, who, is supposedly very intelligent, versed in the ways of the world in which he lives, and has had a whole lot more time to think about, and mull over the facts than I, but doesn't see what is right in front of his face? That isn't a failure on the part of the character, that is a failure on the part of the author. Boo, boo I say. I'm sorry to be a troll , but damn, did you have to mail it in so hard?

It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home.

The post of Head Girl of Whitehall looks fantastic on anyone's resume. It places the lucky winner on equal terms to the staff, granting them authority, power, and responsibility that no other student can even dream of possessing. Naturally, Emily doesn't want it. But when she returns to Whitehall for her sixth and final year, she discovers that the staff has elected her to the post - and refusal isn't an option. Reluctantly, she starts to carry out her new duties, unaware that deadly enemies are waiting in the shadows, preparing themselves to strike at her when her back is turned.

Ghost Writer? I hope so, cuz WTF
Revisado: 07-09-21
I have been binge listening to this series, and for the most part, other than a few minor issues I have with the authors lack of creativity within his own well developed magic system, it has been enjoyable. Other than the obvious formula used for each book, the story is fairly well told. In no way is CN a 5 star writer, but until this book he has been a pretty solid 4, at least on story telling and world development, buttttt,,,,,,, I have to assume he wasn't feeling well, or had other obligations to uphold, and formatted the basic story line, and handed it off to a ghost writer to meet his publisher's dead line, because this book was terrible. I hate it when authors dumb down thier character to fit a pre planned plot element. Emily literally, and I am not mis using the word, I mean literally, lost about 25 IQ points, between this book and the last. There are way to many recaps of previous story, that.....Hello, we know, after all, we read or listened to the previous books, and Emily spends almost two thirds of the book in her own head, it's a wonder she got anything accomplished, and the crazy amount of time spent, referencing previous occurrences, just seems like the ghost writer was trying to convince us he, or she was CN. I hope the next one is better, cause I can't take anymore of the new imroved, and much stupider Emily, shame on you CN, you are way better than this, and you should be ashamed. Good Day!!

Take some responsibility!!!!
Revisado: 05-01-21
I read the first book, and it started out compelling enough, I think I gave it four stars, but don't bother with this one, maybe skip to book three. This whole book is spent having the characters make stupid decisions that keep getting them captured, and almost a third of the book is the author using his henchmen and suporting characters to torture a bunch of fourteen year olds, and he is very descriptive about it, by the time I got half way through the book I was about done, you almost get the feeling he doesn't like his main character, so he spends most of his time screwing over the main character, or abusing his friends, and killing off anyone who helps them. They have seen horrors all around them, thier enemies kill and murder in plain view, but they can't even manage to kill once or twice in self preservation. When they get a wish, they waiste it to send a message when they could have used it to make the bad guy dead, it's hard to root for these guys, maybe they don't deserve to win, and maybe the author is a child, who needs to go to the wood shed and be taught a lesson.

Harry Potter Much?
Revisado: 04-19-21
In many ways this series seems just shy of plagiarism, just different enough. I was mind boggled by the parallels. Dispite the part where these people are supposedly adults, they act like preteens, common sense alludes the main character almost as much as his magic, and if he spent half as much time in reality as he does in his own head he wouldn't have half the problems he does, and just like Harry Potter he starts to be a whiny little b in book 4.
