Deeply Personal & Relatable
Revisado: 05-14-24
I love that Kerry Washington narrated her own story; it provides listeners/readers with a deeper connection with the stories and experiences shared. Kerry's story is vulnerable, relatable, and inspiring. Hearing her experiences has provided me with a new understanding of my own life journey, and for that I am grateful. Wonderful memoir!!

Historia
Light-skinned Black woman Irene Redfield encounters an old childhood friend - Clare - who is now "passing" as a White woman. Clare is married to a racist White man, who doesn't know she has African American blood. In spite of the danger of being found out by her husband and society at large, she finds herself helplessly drawn to Irene's world.

Unexpected Ending
Revisado: 12-23-21
Loved the performance! Interesting story line, especially since I never thought it would be an easy endeavor for an African American person to live their life as another race. This reminds you how wrapped up we can become in creating a life others would envy versus living the life we most desperately desire. The ending left me wanting more, which I suppose, was the intention.

Interesting Dialogue
Revisado: 12-17-21
Intriguing to hear the stories of accomplished POC with varied and similar experiences. A common thread among the narratives is purpose and persistence. I hope to have an answer for both in my own life, sooner rather than later.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

A Reminder of the Importance of Culture & Context
Revisado: 12-08-21
Engaging story that I couldn't wait to finish. Although I guessed how the story might end within a few chapters, it was nice listening to the journey of the lead character. Gives listeners a cultural component and a reminder that the context influencing actions is important to consider.

Historia
Confessions of a Token Black Girl is a snappy comedic tale framing Danielle's first-hand experiences in Wisconsin and other places as the perpetual "token Black girl", fraught with dark moments and hate crimes. It's a coming-of-age-story but instead of finding herself during a road trip, Danielle found herself through the effects of racism. This book humorously chronicles Danielle's quest for understanding what Black identity means to her - instead of what it means to everyone else.

Short, Poignant, & So So Relatable
Revisado: 12-01-21
I hope Audible produces more of these Thought Series. Although it was short (43 minutes), I enjoyed every minute. I connected with most of the author's experiences and the sarcastic humor inserted at moments came at the right times. Definitely left me with things to consider moving forward as an African American woman in the U.S.

Historia
Joan Morgan offers a provocative and powerful look into the life of the modern Black woman: a complex world in which feminists often have not-so-clandestine affairs with the most sexist of men, where women who treasure their independence frequently prefer men who pick up the tab, and where the deluge of babymothers and babyfathers reminds Black women who long for marriage that traditional nuclear families are a reality for less than 40 percent of the population.

Amazing & Reflective
Revisado: 11-07-21
This book appeared as a recommended book by Audible based on my previous selections, and I am so glad I followed through with the recommendation!! This body of work made a concept/identity (feminism) relatable and allowed individuals outside of academia an opportunity to engage in this very necessary conversation. I found parallels to my life, including expectations and thoughts that remain isolated in my mind. A must read for anyone looking to delve deeper into feminism without the heavy jargon. Can't wait to read more of Joan Morgan's body of work.

In this evocative short piece, Candace worries that her mother, Annie, has reached an emotional breaking point. When her best friend loses her battle with cancer, Annie is acting in uncharacteristic ways, seemingly less concerned than ever about what her friends and neighbors think of her - a troubling development in her daughter’s eyes. But while Candace may think she knows her mother better than anyone, something deeper lingers beneath the surface, and times of hardship have a way of bringing us closer together than ever.

Good Coverage of an Interesting Story
Revisado: 10-24-21
The wonderland murders was a new story to me before engaging with this podcast. There are a lot of moving pieces that law enforcement had difficulty pulling together. This story reinforced that we should never base our opinions of others on appearances or perceived appearances. Everyone has a story.

Revisado: 10-23-21
A powerful glimpse into the life of Billie Holiday. I already planned to watch The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and after listening to this podcast, I want to see it much sooner than originally planned. This is a beautiful overview of the strength of Billie Holiday and the role her experiences played in the music she shared with the world. A relatable examination of Billie's life as a Black Woman in the US, and an inspiration for us to continue in exerting the strength, determination, and defiance instilled long ago.
