Historia
We were created to work, and our work provides unique meaning and purpose in our lives. Yet today, we are living in a crisis of apathy and ignorance regarding work’s theological and existential nature. There is no shortage of books pleading with people to work less, to find “balance”, to think less of career and more of the things that bring them “happiness”. Likewise, there is no shortage of books making the case that work matters a great deal—that good things come from fruitful labor. This book belongs in neither of those categories.

A Proper Understanding of Work for Christians
Revisado: 04-25-25
The author critiques sub-par understanding of work and career going after Gnosticism, dualism, and false dichotomies that have infiltrated our understanding of the meaning and purpose work. He provides a fresh argument for work.

Historia
Have you ever doubted your faith? Have you ever, deep down in your heart, doubted that God was really present in your life? Or wondered whether everything you believed in as a Christian was false? Call it existential doubt. Call it “the dark night of the soul,” as one Christian saint famously did. Whatever you call it, it’s real. It is personal, it is painful, it is distressing, and it can last for years, maybe even a lifetime. But you are not alone.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

How the Civil War Was Birthed
Revisado: 08-19-24
Erik Larson does a magnificent job wrangling wide ranging sources into a coherent and engaging narrative. He weaves picturesque and personal details into a chronological story that transports the reader/listener into the minds of the protagonists and antagonists as the drama unfolds. Miscalculations abound. There are several “what if” moments revealed in the unfolding of events. Many predictions from both sides demonstrate the fact that “we know in part” and the consequences of that partial knowledge. A cautionary tale indeed.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

I like the story of a child growing up into a productive member of society despite and because of his familial background. The language is a bit rough (but no doubt a part of the story).
I also like finding out about J. D. Vance before his rise to Vice Presidential candidate.

Science, Inference to The Best Explanation, God
Revisado: 08-03-24
I appreciate the thoroughness of Meyer to explore all of the current philosophical constructs of atheistic and agnostic scientists. He graciously but completely dismantles their appeals to naturalistic explanations for the universe, fine tuning, and information rich life and the trustworthiness of the mind.
He does so by taking us through the most significant scientific discoveries in the modern era. The fact that the universe has a beginning (The Big Bang), extreme fine tuning probability, the origin of life, DNA, the Cambrian explosion are shown to point to an intelligent agency as the best explanation.
Meyer distills the many theories in vogue to help the layman catch the main points of argument. I also like his personal journey being included. I recommend this book for all people who have been taught that atheism and evolution have a corner on science and rationalism.

Historia
Eric Huffman, author of 40 Days of Doubt, helps listeners understand and cope with confusion about the Bible and provides answers to questions by reframing it as a perfect and seamless story. Huffman illustrates how the Bible, even the parts some consider ungodly, presents the beautiful story that God intended to tell. Through storytelling from his own experiences and his take on Bible stories, Huffman helps listeners understand the Bible by interpreting the entire book through the lens of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection.

Great Resource Engaging to Skeptics and Fellow Believers on the Reliability of the Bible
Revisado: 04-26-24
Eric Huffman brings both empathy to the skeptic and clarity to the issues raised. The book dispels myths and misconceptions about the Bible. It provides sound ways to negotiate the difficulties we perceive with our contemporary paradigms. Ultimately, the Bible and its focus, the one to which it speaks is vindicated as attesting to the Monomyth or the “true myth”. It is a love story that points to Jesus and his act of redemption and beginning a Jubilee movement that will finally be fulfilled at his return.

Historia
It turns out giving up your "right" to be offended can be one of the most freeing, healthy, simplifying, relaxing, refreshing, stress-relieving, encouraging things you can do. It's a radical, provocative idea: We're not entitled to get offended or stay angry. The idea of our own "righteous anger" is a myth. It is the number one problem in our societies today and, as Dallas Willard says, Christians have not been taught out of it. But what if Christians were the most unoffendable people on the planet?

Brant makes a persuasive argument against anger as a choice and taking offense. Many scriptures are examined. But do not expect an exhaustive exposition of the Bible.

In Biblical Critical Theory, Christopher Watkin draws a winsome vision for biblical cultural engagement in which faithfulness to Scripture and sensitivity to culture walk hand in hand. If Christians want to speak with a fresh, engaging and constructive voice within our culture, we need to press deeper into the core truths of the Bible.

A Contemporary Biblical View of Reality From Ancient Wisdom
Revisado: 12-29-23
Today’s society is becoming unhinged as clamoring yet heretical reductionist socio-political paradigms obscure reality and seduce many. The author demonstrates the superiority of the Bible to make sense of our past, present and future. The resulting model equips the church to rightly engage our culture with a sympathetic but more beneficial approach.
