What we often forget to understand are the motivations that caused him to drive the quest for independence to its successful conclusion. The causes can’t be distilled into a few areas or moments in time; rather, it is best to look at his life and understand the elements that surrounded him and preceded him. Washington’s life was unlike most men in his position.

Washington may have won the battles on the field, but Jefferson won the battles in our hearts. That is why he is still fondly remembered and cherished. To understand America, one has to understand Jefferson. It is a course in citizenship.

Excellent, balanced biography. This is no hagiography. Jefferson was a man, warts and all. A man of his times, yet remarkable. I think he'd be astounded by today's worshipping of the Constitution.

An outstanding listen

Most people would argue that we don't need another Lincoln biography, but this volume is most definitely worth listening. In part, because it focuses on the development of Lincoln's thinking about slavery and equality. Grant...also an outstanding effort.

A thorough and thoroughly listenable biography of one of our greatest presidents. J.R. MacGregor is meticulous in his notes, extensive in his coverage, and yet manages to make this book listen almost like a novel, keeping you turning chapter , which is quite important given its considerable length. This is not your father's stuffy, dusty, and dry history. I look forward to listening the other volumes in the series.
