Historia
Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where luxury hotels line pristine white sand beaches, Safiya Sinclair grew up guarding herself against an ever-present threat. Preaching fire and brimstone, her father, a volatile reggae musician and strict believer in a militant sect of Rastafari, railed against Babylon, the immoral, corrupting influence of the Western world just beyond their gate. To protect the purity of the women in their family he forbade almost everything: no friends but this family and no future but this path.

What an exceptional book, narrated so beautifully by the author. It had me mesmerised, spellbound, entranced and enchanted.
Her words, her language, the story she tells - just wow.

Historia
When the rallying cry “Black Lives Matter” was heard across the world in 2013, Andre Henry was one of the millions for whom the movement caused a political awakening and a rupture in some of his closest relationships with White people. As he began using his artistic gifts to share his experiences and perspective, Henry was aggrieved to discover that many White Americans - people he called friends and family - were more interested in debating whether racism existed or whether Henry was being polite enough in the way he used his voice.

Mesmerising story-telling
Revisado: 06-16-23
Please read this book. The author writes beautifully - there are so many phrases I wanted to burn into my memory. But it’s more than that, he interweaves his personal story with what’s happened and happening in our world - I’m ordering a print copy after listening to this masterful narration because I want to keep his words and wisdom close to me. If you’re on the fence, get it. You won’t regret it.

A brilliant, gripping tale - I will be listening to this again. Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be in a hotel taken over by gunmen? Here, you hear it from the perspective of two fascinating characters - and you learn their back stories as the siege progresses. Highly recommended!

Historia
As an adult, Lauren Hough has had many identities: an airman in the U.S. Air Force, a cable guy, a bouncer at a gay club. As a child, however, she had none. Growing up as a member of the infamous cult The Children of God, Hough had her own self robbed from her. The cult took her all over the globe - to Germany, Japan, Texas, Chile - but it wasn't until she finally left for good that Lauren understood she could have a life beyond 'The Family'. Along the way, she's loaded up her car and started over, trading one life for the next.

Another ‘cult baby’ says thank you
Revisado: 05-26-21
This book hit me hard - while we grew up in different cults (mine was a more evangelical one), the author’s descriptions of how her childhood impacted her psyche could be me.
It’s not all culty and doom and gloom: the many funny moments, the social commentary, the sex (among adults), the brutal honesty - just wow. I’m going to listen to it again.
Love that there are separate essays, easy to dip into, though I binge listened to it over two days.

Listen to this book if you’ve been sexually assaulted
Revisado: 07-10-20
Brilliant book - as always - from Mr Krakauer. An in-depth investigation into one particular place and time, but so universal in its theme. What I particularly appreciated was the insights into what happened after the assaults in the minds and bodies of the women. Unbelievably helpful in understanding how sexual assault in my teens shaped me and my understanding of the world. Thank you!
