Was disappointing
Revisado: 04-18-25
Though I am not sure what I expected, this was not it.
The multiple narrators made it choppy and hard to listen to.

Not for me.
Revisado: 04-18-25
Though I like a story with twists and turns, this one was just too much for my liking. The male narrator ruined half the book for me. I stuck with it, because I kept hoping it would improve. I am sure there is an audience for this type of story but I am not part of it.

Too convoluted for me
Revisado: 08-30-24
I am able to give this two starts because I think the narrator did a great job.
The story was too convoluted but I kept listening in hopes of it getting better. I don't really understand why it was suggested based on other books I have read/listened to.

This is the story of Bull Meecham, the epitome of the Marine officer. A gifted athlete whose best never satisfies his father, Ben must balance his own ambition with his father’s expectations – and decide what course he will chart for himself and what kind of man he will become.

Good story,
Revisado: 01-25-24
I've read a lot of Pat Conroy over the years and don't know how or why I missed this one. It is a good story with engaging characters. I wasn't over the moon about the narrator but was determined to listen to the book.
Not for the faint of heart as it is raw and gritty and is set during a time when language wasn't as PC as it is now.

Sean was a seventh-grade drop-out, a dishwasher then a construction worker to help his mother and sister scrape by, and a self-described "nobody with a sad story behind him." Yet he cannot deny the glimmers of life's goodness even amid its rough edges. Such goodness becomes even harder to deny when Sean meets the love of his life at a fried chicken church potluck, and harder still when his lifelong love of storytelling leads him to stages across the southeast, where he is known and loved as "Sean of the South."

Glad I stuck with it.
Revisado: 01-14-24
I almost stopped listening because I wasn't interested in a religious book. I am glad I stuck with it...it's not religious beyond explaining a person's background. The subtle, yet spot, wit is a treat all the way through. The story is well told and interesting. Would recommend. Wait for it...the humor in what could have been a sad story is wonderful. It's the story of a life in all it's ups and downs and growth.

Too Preachy
Revisado: 08-05-23
I was looking forward to this book. Memoirs of people who have survived difficult childhoods help me to realize that I am not alone in this. But this book was, from the start, a preachathon. I couldn't finish it. There should be a warning that this is about how to get past a bad childhood through god. There are other ways.

Through these 10 lectures, you will delve into the darkness of Poe’s most nightmarish stories, including “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Pit and the Pendulum”, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”. You’ll also learn how he invented the detective story and explored themes of love and loss in such poems as “Ulalume” and “Annabel Lee”. And you’ll discover how Poe employed symbolism, imagery, rhythm and rhyme, irony and paradox, repetition, simile, and foreshadowing to create a unique body of work.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-05-23
I almost never quit a book. I made it through most of this one and then gave up. How you can make Poe boring is beyond me but this manages to do so. It's bad enough that the content is mind numbingly boring but the monotone presentation makes it unbearable.

I really wanted to like this more than I did.
Revisado: 06-19-23
Lately I have been on a medical history book binge. So when this one came up, I figured it fell right into that theme. I was not fond of the narrator but stuck with it. It's very science-y, which is fine but I thought it was a little much for a book that's not a text book. I almost gave up at the halfway point when a long list of people who were afflicted with a particular disease was read with each one's birth and death dates. So not necessary. I skipped ahead as it seemed to go on forever and my mind had wandered off to wonder just how long the list would be.
I truly wanted to like this book. I have found other books on medical history I have enjoyed more. There is a lot of information here and a really interesting part that nearly foreshadows the COVID pandemic is a way that was eerily correct.

Historia
Today it is known as Roosevelt Island. In 1828, when New York City purchased this narrow, two-mile-long island in the East River, it was called Blackwell's Island. There, over the next hundred years, the city would build a lunatic asylum, prison, hospital, workhouse, and almshouse. Stacy Horn has crafted a compelling and chilling narrative told through the stories of the poor souls sent to Blackwell's, as well as the period's city officials, reformers, and journalists (including the famous Nellie Bly). Damnation Island re-creates what daily life was like on the island....

Too long and repetitive
Revisado: 06-14-23
A lot of information in this book regarding the 'care and treatment' of those with mental illness, the poor, and those convicted of crimes. But, for me, it over did the details and there was much repetition. It's not a book I would revisit.
