Historia
When former spy Maggie Bird retired to the seaside hamlet of Purity, Maine, she settled in for a quiet life with breathtaking views. But enemies from her past soon threatened to destroy everything. Maggie survived, thanks to her wits and the collective intelligence of the Martini Club, the circle of ex-CIA friends in her cocktail-sipping book club. Their handiwork, however, caught the attention of young police chief Jo Thibodeau. Now Jo and her neighborhood ex-spies have an uneasy alliance.

The Martini Club... my favorite retirees!
Revisado: 04-21-25
I really enjoyed the first book, but didn't like this one quite as much. I think it was the narrator, who sometimes struck me as too dramatic, but not in a mystery/action way. Her style highlighted details that made it seem like this series is starting to turn into a cosy. I hope not, because I live the idea of retired spies solving crimes.

Another fun listen, but narration is distracting
Revisado: 01-20-25
Private is a fun series, but this time Jack seems to be off his game, walking into a lot of traps. Still, I enjoyed it but found the narrators to be a bit distracting and the Russian accent was cheesy and unnecessary. .

Historia
Jim Nicholson was one of the CIA's top veteran case officers. By day he taught spycraft at the CIA's clandestine training center, The Farm. By night he was a minivan-driving single father racing home to have dinner with his kids. But Nicholson led a double life. For more than two years, he had met covertly with agents of Russia's foreign intelligence service and turned over troves of classified documents. In 1997 Nicholson became the highest-ranking CIA officer ever convicted of espionage.

Great story, but bogs down in detail
Revisado: 09-18-24
This should be a page turner, but it drags on and the pace is slow because of unnecessary details. Do we need to know what a school uniform looked like? The judge or prosecutor's hair? There is a lot of time spent on things that have no bearing on the story and turn a great tale into a bit of a slog.

This book grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let go. Just when you think Danny is out of the woods, there's another twist. Great plot, well narrated. Don't start it if you don't have time to stay with it, because you won't be able to stop listening.

If you enjoy a classic English country house murder, this is for you. Perfectly narrated with all the required ingredients (except a locked room). Lots of fun and a great way to relax, but not so obvious that you'll figure the whole thing out.

Another great DC Smith mystery
Revisado: 07-12-24
If you like fast paced action, this isn't your series. If you enjoy interesting characters, thinking detectives, plots that build and build with a dash of humor on the way, visit King's Lake. My disappointment in DC's retirement is made better by the fact that there will be 2 series to follow and I'll be visiting King's Lake for a while. Perfectly narrated as always.

Good plot, but writing style is distracting
Revisado: 06-18-24
I was excited for this book and I enjoyed the plot. That said, I found the writing to be distracting. It was far too descriptive for a thriller. Do we need to know the details of the upholstery or room decor especially when a character has been tortured? Do we need minute details of jewelry and clothing? Do bodies need to be described as taut? Maybe the goal is to appeal to a female audience, but as a woman I found it to be distracting. I'm sure the narrator was following direction, but her style just highlighted the disconnect and I found myself wondering if she usually narrates romances.
