When dessert chef Casey Feldstein finds out that her late aunt's business, Yarn2Go, has one more yarn retreat scheduled, she decides to go ahead and host the event, despite her complete lack of experience as a knitter. At least the retreat is on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula. But the idyllic setting is soured when a retreat regular is found murdered in her hotel room. Feeling a sense of responsibility, Casey begins to weave the clues together and detects a pattern which may shed light on her aunt's suspicious death.

Predictable but charming
Revisado: 12-11-24
The narration was warm and pleasant to listen to. The plot was entertaining enough, but it was egregiously predictable. Almost as soon as certain people or events are introduced, you can start checking off "that's connected" or "that's a red herring." Once two things are introduced early in the story, the killer and reason for the crimes are obvious. There are no more surprises and I spent the rest of the book waiting for the main character to get there. Some of her actions were ridiculous, but the story managed to keep her on the side of charming-yet-frustrating instead of crossing into infuriating. The mommy drama in so many places was annoying. At least she sort of stood up for herself in the end? And I'm so tired of cop love interests in cozy mysteries. As soon as that character was introduced, I thought "please, no!" I mostly read this for the fiber arts aspect as it's fun to crochet while listening to fiction on a similar topic. It was very successful in that respect. The retreat was fun to experience, and I enjoyed the character growth. I'm torn, but I might give one more book in the series a shot. Here's hoping the author gets a bit more devious in their plot misdirection.

So glad I chose this audiobook!
Revisado: 01-20-21
Loved the story. Great worldbuilding with interesting characters. Both the flashbacks giving the god's history and the main storyline were enjoyable. Their timing played off each other well so that as I began to understand a situation in the main storyline, the flashbacks would be setting the stage to show how that situation came to be. The conclusion was very satisfying, as well. The narration was a pleasure to listen to with accurate and enjoyable depictions of various emotions. Kudos for being able to say the lines of a crying character in a way that was easily understandable while still sounding like they're crying.

Witty and Adorable
Revisado: 06-06-20
Lighthearted, hilarious, and superbly human. Andrea Vernon gives us hope that one day we'll find a job where our obsessive behaviour, intrusive thoughts, and awkward humor will result in exceptional aptitude instead of repetitive disappointment.
I loved this book and will look for more by the author. I thought the narrator did a great job with the accents. I enjoyed listening to her voice. Some of the audio editing leaves pauses that are a second or two too long, but it didn't get in the way of the story.

Historia
My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner. At least, I used to be. Thanks to the supernatural bad luck that turns everything I do against me, these days I’m more of a walking disaster. Getting rid of this curse is the only way to get my life back. Unfortunately, dragon magic is every bit as sneaky and deadly as the monsters behind it, and just as hard to beat.

Enjoyed it so much more than I expected!
Revisado: 01-16-19
I was worried that I wouldn't be able to connect with the setting, and it did take me a while to feel invested in the story, but I ended up liking several characters (and loving to dislike several others) and found myself drawn into the mystery. It's a Whodunit with gods and magic.

Historia
During her first weeks in the deeply immersive VR game, Relic Online, she’s hacked out a home from a choking jungle, gathered a tribe of loyal followers, and earned a wisp stalker who insists she’s some kind of champion. But Relic Online isn’t some wussy kids game, and there will be no easy-street cruising for Devon. Like a monk racking up combo points, the system opens a fresh offensive by crippling her most powerful ability. Following through, it strangles the village food supply, sends demons bursting through rifts in the Earth, and delivers a final, devastating throat punch.

Hooked on Stonehaven League Books!
Revisado: 01-02-19
Carrie Summers' Stonehaven League books have the perfect amount of character sheet / mechanics for an audiobook. Enough to enjoy geeking out over some stats and abilities (and settlement building!), but not so much that they meld into a droning litany of numbers. I wish the next two books were on audiobook already. I'll probably read the ebooks because I needs me some more Stonehaven, but I'd strongly consider still picking up the audiobooks when they become available, particularly if the same narrators are used. This is turning into my favorite LitRPG series. Love the game world, the balance between settlement building and exploring, and the AI's wry sense of humor!

Historia
It's early October 1923, and three interesting things are going on in the generally dull town of Rosedale, New Mexico: the fall cattle drive, the fall rodeo, and a tent revival. Annabelle Blue is excited about the first two events. The last one might be okay if it weren't for the Reverend Milo Strickland's sister, Esther, whose ethereal loveliness has captivated all the men in town, including Annabelle's long-time beau, Phil Gunderson.

Hooked me for the series!
Revisado: 02-06-14
Would you listen to Pecos Valley Revival again? Why?
I'm not sure I would listen to this particular book in the series again since it was a fairly quick read and the problem with whodunits is that once you know "who dun it," the suspense goes out of the book. However, I've learned that the same narrator should be doing the next book so I definitely plan to get that one. I may even go back and listen to the first one in the series even though it had a different narrator. It was a fun story and I like Annabelle, the protagonist.
What about Heather Thompson’s performance did you like?
The narrator brought vibrancy to the main character and gave the story an energy that made listening to it enjoyable and addicting. There was a slight tunnel effect in some of the chapters, but not enough for me to dock a star as it didn't prevent me from enjoying the story or the narration.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was very pleasantly surprised when it made me laugh. This book was a bit of a stretch for me. I read it based on a recommendation even though it was out of my normal genres. I was laughing out loud within the first 20 minutes.
Any additional comments?
I docked the story one star because there is sooo much repetitive observation of the people in the town and as well as obsessing on the possible romances and jiltings... and then the resolution is over like that. *snaps fingers* It just seemed like for putting that much effort into listening to Annabelle obsess over various people, there should have been more of the mystery, drama and action near the end. But things are barely getting jumping with the mystery before you find out whodunit. I would have enjoyed more of a balance between action and exposition. Still, an enjoyable quick listen.
