Historia
At the dawn of the 20th century, a great confidence suffused America. Isaac Cline was one of the era's new men, a scientist who believed he knew all there was to know about the motion of clouds and the behavior of storms. The idea that a hurricane could damage the city of Galveston, Texas, where he was based, was to him preposterous, "an absurd delusion." It was 1900, a year when America felt bigger and stronger than ever before. Nothing in nature could hobble the gleaming city of Galveston, then a magical place that seemed destined to become the New York of the Gulf.

The history of forecasting amidst the great need for predicting accurate information.
Revisado: 02-26-25
The development of characters is very well done and the reader becomes well acquainted with them. The book is suspenseful with the danger of the inexorable progression of the storm. The terrible impact of the storm is well documented and graphic.

Historia
The number one New York Times best seller by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough rediscovers an important chapter in the American story that's "as resonant today as ever" (The Wall Street Journal) - the settling of the Northwest Territory by courageous pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would define our country.

Realism of the journey
Revisado: 02-15-24
I enjoyed learning about the people, great and small, who opened the lands of the Northwest. The author describes the initiating forces that drove the implementation of the vision to settle the area. The obstacles were presented but his historically accurate descriptions of the great people involved were illuminated. We see the hardworking pioneer woman, the intellectual doctors and scientists and also the mother of Charles Dickens. From John Adam’s to Harriet Beecher Stowe pioneers walk across the stage.

The raw emotion and realism
Revisado: 02-11-24
This account of the war brought the era all back to me! I followed my first husband to Fort Bennington for OCS. There I met military families through my church and was a member of the wive’s club. The chopper noise was very loud. Most of the class went to Vietnam. The emotions were raw. A good friend’s young son died in a copter crash a few weeks into his tour. A neighbor saw a buddy blown up by a grenade. This book brought the sounds, loss and emotions back. The protests, shooting at Kent State and demonstrations. The whole world changed. It is here in this book.

Historia
The Chuzzlewits are a family divided by money and selfishness; even young Martin, the eponymous hero, is arrogant and self-centred. He offends his grandfather by falling in love with the latter’s ward, Mary, and sets out to make his own fortune in life, travelling as far as America - which produces from Dickens a savage satire on a new world tainted with the vices of the old. Martin’s nature slowly changes through his bitter experience of life and his enduring love for Mary.
