Our understanding of the American West has moved far beyond pop culture in recent years. The legendary people and events we associate with the Wild West - the last stand at the Alamo, the Battle of Little Bighorn, the exploits of Calamity Jane, the hardships of the Oregon Trail - are even more fascinating once the historical realities have been separated from the myths.

One of the Best
Revisado: 03-07-23
If you’re like me, you have started a few of these courses, but given up about halfway through because you just lose interest. This one, however, is terrific. The professor is refreshingly evenhanded in his treatment of the west, the people who settled it, and the people who were already there. Is enthusiasm for the subject matter comes through in his delivery and I’m really glad I chanced upon this one.

Historia
Between 1348 and 1715, western Europe was fraught with turmoil, beset by the Black Plague, numerous and bitter religious wars, and frequent political revolutions and upheavals. Yet the Europe that emerged from this was vastly different from the Europe that entered it. By the start of the 18th century, Europe had been revitalized and reborn in a radical break with the past that would have untold ramifications for human civilization.

Lectures from Notes & Sounds Authentic
Revisado: 12-29-22
I understand why people are initially dismissive of this professor. I don’t know why he rhymes “papal” with “apple.” And when I first heard him, I thought to myself that he sounded very understated for a great courses professor. But he grew on me—and the thing i like is that he doesn't sound as if he is reading his lectures verbatim from a transcript. He sounds as if he has notes and is talking to you from them. Yes, many of TCC's people sound more polished, but I liked how Prof. Fix sounds like he's with you in the car, saying, "OK--so this is what happened with Luther."

Historia
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Historia
At the dawn of the last millennium in the year 1000, Europe was one of the world's more stagnant regions-an economically undeveloped, intellectually derivative, and geopolitically passive backwater, with illiteracy, starvation, and disease the norm for almost everyone. Yet only three centuries later, all of this had changed.

Revisado: 12-02-22
A good series on the high Middle Ages. The prof is engaging and does a thing where he says “and” as “aaaaaand” that initially struck me as odd but which grew endearing. The parts on scholasticism and the University are terrific.

Historia
These 36 lectures tell the remarkable story of a tumultuous thousand-year period in the history of England. Dominated by war, conquest, and the struggle to balance the stability brought by royal power with the rights of the governed, it was a period that put into place the foundation of much of the world we know today. As you journey through this largely chronological narrative you'll see key themes emerge, including the assimilation of successive waves of invaders, the tense relationship between kings and the nobility, and the constant battles over money and taxation.

Inside Baseball
Revisado: 11-11-22
The professor is great and beyond well-prepared. She has a great voice and everything is done with the upmost professionalism. My only complaint, and this might be on me, is that sometimes the lectures get far too inside baseball in terms of whose third cousin was married to which great nephew of a previous monarch, etc. I couldn’t remember that stuff 30 seconds after I heard it, but I did remember the big themes and the big events. I wonder if this would’ve been better as 18 or 24 lectures. But again, that’s just me. I listen to every word and I’m glad that I did.

Historia
For a time, Jimmy spent his expat days in Mexico unearthing pre-Columbian artifacts. Now he makes a living doing small trucking jobs and helping out with the occasional missing-person situation. But Jimmy’s laid-back lifestyle is being seriously imposed upon by a ninety-pound stalker named Louise. Add to this a sudden wave of hippies led by a murderous ex-con guru in search of psychic happenings, archaeologists unearthing (illegally) the Mayan tombs, and Louise and her weirdo husband’s quest for UFO sites, and Jimmy’s south-of-the-border existence is in danger.

Historia
Roughly 2,500 years ago, the Athenian people established a radical democracy in which power derived from the votes of everyday citizens. At a time when local governments ranged from oligarchy to tyranny, the elite classes of Athens gradually ceded power to the inexperienced masses, whose votes served as referendums for everything from taxation to war to welfare. The sequence of events that led to this development is astonishing, and the society that flourished under Athenian democracy is one of the greatest - even if greatly flawed - achievements in world history.

Fake Neutrality
Revisado: 05-18-22
The professor wisely says in the beginning if he does not believe it’s his job to push a political position. By minute six, he’s already made two cracks about Trump, the second being that the 2016 election would shake Athenian’s belief in the capability of regular people to be involved in government. Check, please.

Historia
The acidly funny first book starring the subversive sleuth in one of the most successful mystery series of all time. Fletch is an investigative reporter whose methods are a little unorthodox. Currently he's living on the beach. He's taking more than a little flak from his editor. She doesn't appreciate his style. Or the expense account items he's racking up. Or his definition of the word "deadline". Or the divorce lawyers who keep showing up at the office. So when multimillionaire Alan Stanwyk offers Fletch the job of a lifetime, which could be worth a fortune, he's intrigued.

Cringeworthy
Revisado: 06-18-21
This is a good book if you think that people will willingly divulge all of their secrets and just random information to a stranger. There are so many eye rolls here. It’s really forced. It would be fine for a book to listen to on vacation or something, but the resolution is so ridiculous and, again, people just spill their life stories to fletch.

Who Directed This?
Revisado: 11-04-20
Bronson Pinchot is one of the greatest audio book readers I’ve ever heard. However, for some reason, in this book every time he has to read a long quotation from another source, he lapses into a near whisper. It’s incredibly annoying. I can’t believe the director didn’t find this irritating or offputting. His voice becomes so quiet during these times that it’s almost like he’s speaking softly and directly into your ear, trying to lull you to sleep.
That all stops by the last hour or so, however, and the book itself is pretty good.
