Meet Linda Breland, single parent of two teenage daughters. The oldest, Lindsey, who always held her younger sister in check, is leaving for college. And Gracie, her Tasmanian devil, is giving her nightmares. Linda's personal life? Well, between the married men, the cold New Jersey winters, her pinched wallet and her ex-husband who marries a beautiful, successful woman ten years younger than she is - let's just say, Linda has seen enough to fill 1000 pages.

Worst Narration Ever!
Revisado: 06-25-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would change the readers. The forced ʻsouthernʻ accents and the obnoxious voice of Louise made this very painful to listen to.
Would you recommend Shem Creek to your friends? Why or why not?
Not the audio version. I found the characterization of Louise offensive - not sure if the intent was racial stereotyping, but that is how it came across to me. It certainly did not fit the character and at times the words werenʻt even understandable as spoken.
How could the performance have been better?
Not sure that some of them could have been much worse.

Mark Nepo is a beloved teacher, poet, and storyteller. In this book he invites us to live from our inner core in ways small and large, every day. To listen to the stories in this book is to find our own place of courage and peace.

Any additional comments?
I tried to like this. I listened to it from beginning to end, wanting to like it. The whole book felt like the author was trying desperately to find some deep message in everything that happens in life. It felt forced and not at all inspiring. When he related a dream where a 10 year old boy was thrilled to get a desk drawer to play with as a dollhouse and used paper clips as dolls, I gave up any hope that there was a point or message in this book....On the upside, the author did a nice job with the reading. But I will never waste my time with another of his books....

Historia
Liz and Sarabeth were childhood neighbors, brought as close as sisters by the suicide of Sarabeth's mother when the girls were just 16. In the decades that followed - through Liz's marriage and Sarabeth's attempts to make a happy life for herself - their relationship remained a source of continuity and strength. But when Liz's adolescent daughter enters dangerous waters that threaten to engulf the family, the fault lines in the women's friendship are revealed.

drawn out agony.....
Revisado: 09-24-07
I have a little over an hour left on this book and I am only listening to the end because I keep thinking that something interesting has to happen at some point!! The characters are all difficult to like, self centered and depressing - I find it hard to have any compassion for any of them. The book is excruciatingly slow moving....I expected so much more from this author. I think the narrator is fine, she just doesn't have much to work with on this one.
The book deals with suicide and I have to say that at several points I was hoping that ALL of the characters would commit suicide and put this listener out of her misery!!!
Don't bother with this one.
