Great story!

In the Service of Dragons by Robert Stanek exceeded my expectations and this is after I listened to all enjoyed all four of his "Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches" books. I like being surprised by what happens and the book had lots of that. Vilmos Tabborath is a 12 year old village boy who is learning his way as a wizard in a world where magic is considered evil. Adrina Alder is a 13 year old princess of a kingdom that is dying. Together with the help of heroes of legend and the elves, they are trying to save their world. In this book, the titans, eagle lords and mystics from the ancient past return to help stop the coming darkness. I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment. Robert Stanek is by far my favorite author.

I bought this entire series after seeing an interview with the author in the news and I'm so glad I did. Robert Stanek is a fantastic writer. The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches series is truly excellent. I can see what he is called America's Tolkien. He's gifted, talented, and underappreciated yet has managed to create one of the most brilliant and stirring works I've ever read. Taken individually, I'm not so sure I would have the same reaction but together these four books are magnificent and far outshine anything else. If you are considering this book and the rest, don't hesitate but do stick with it through the entire series. In the Service of Dragons is just as good but more action oriented than adventure oriented.

After seeing an interview with the author in the newspaper, I purchased the first book for my kids and for myself. We listened to it on a long road trip and couldn't wait to get back to the story whenever we stopped. The first two books are solid, well written and extremely fun. Yet this third one was a cut above with the feel of the Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia. I loved the many twists and many exciting adventures. Robert Stanek is truly America's Tolkien.

I thought the production was first rate and the cast of characters were very good. The story was paced well and though a bit slow at times it is interesting. By the end I can see where the series is going and I liked the characters! Normally, I would give this 4 stars but because of the rest of the series I'm raising it to 5. I would also recommend Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches and In the Service of Dragons to anyone who like adventurous creative stories like this.

It's just ok

I have to say that, as a fantasy, this book is okay. I could never get into it as well as I could get into other books but it is imaginative. It's not magical like "Elves of the Reaches" but the supernatural elements are there. It may be abit in the children's range rather than young adult however the performance may not keep a child's attention. I won't be listening to the rest of the series.

Calling all Potter, Eragon, Fowl fans

The entire family has been listening to the Arianna Kelt books. This young author (15 years old) has created a magical world that far outshines Artemis Fowl, Eragon and Potter. The few rough edges in the story only made it all the better because you know the author will mature and be one of the greats. We loved every minute of it.

Looking for next Harry Potter... Look no further

I agree anyone ga ga for Harry Potter or Artemis Fowl or Eragon who hasn't read this is missing out. Everyone in the family was enchanted by this book. It is an incredibly fun, engaging listen from an extremely talented but underappreciated young author. This is pure magic!

Where are the movies?

Absolutes & Other Stories is an incredibly good story collection from a favorite author. There's a good mix of stories from the more literary (August Rains) to the extremely fun (Silence is Golden) to the pure science fiction (Absolutes).

Fantastic!

Start with the first one because that's where the story begins but keep going to this one and the next ones because they are what make this series so fantastic! Suffice to say I enjoyed book one, loved book two and was hooked for good. Books 2, 3 and 4 are why Robert Stanek is my #1 favorite author. In the Service of Dragons is just as good!

I saw an interview with the author and immediately purchased the book for my kids and for myself as well! We listened to it on a long road trip and couldn't wait to get back to the story whenever we stopped. We've since listened to or read all of the books.

This truly was a wonderful book. It had the feel of the Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia, but with new owists and adventures. Robert Stanek is truly America's Tolkien. Althought Out of the four "Kingdoms" this first one is my least favorite,it is an excellent start to a truly wonderful story. This is definitely worth your time and money!
