Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

What did I just read and why is it so brilliant?
Revisado: 02-25-25
This was so beautiful and so weird. I couldn’t relate to the character in so many ways but I also completely relate and am here. I think a lot of women in their 40s would. The arc of the story was beautiful.

Historia
Rufus Leung Gresham, future Earl of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel has a problem: the legendary Gresham Trust has been depleted by decades of profligate spending, and behind all the magazine covers and Instagram stories manors and yachts lies nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus’s scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister’s wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who’s-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money.

Mid story, painful narration.
Revisado: 02-18-25
I’m almost exclusively an audiobook reader. I can make it through the majority of narrators because I so strongly prefer audio but this one was painful. The narrator was so breathy and paused every 3-4 words even mid-name. It was so weird and distracting. Better at 1.2x speed. But also, as other have said, some of the voices were shrieky and awful. I think if I read instead of listened, I would have had a different impression about some of the characters but they were voiced extremely forcefully.
Also, the plot is cute, feel-good but not deep and had a lot of big holes. If you let go of reason, it’s fun. If you think too hard, it’s a little painful.

Historia
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Historia
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

I read this after reading a few books that felt a bit traumatizing. This was a delight to find. It is fun and light but not simple or poorly written. It’s so lovely and I recommend without reservations

Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. Big topics but in a funny way
Revisado: 07-11-24
This book is lighthearted and made me laugh several times but it is deceptively deep and looks at a lot of serious topics. The way the characters are woven together is also really beautiful. I would definitely recommend reading this.

Years before the name Alex Murdaugh was splashed across every major media outlet in America, local South Carolina journalist Mandy Matney had an instinct that something wasn’t right in the Lowcountry. The powerful Murdaugh dynasty had dominated rural South Carolina for generations. No one dared to cross them.

Different than most true crime…
Revisado: 04-18-24
I really appreciated how Mandy shared her internal struggles and the workplace battles that she had to navigate to become successful. I also appreciate the true call for justice and victim centered narrative. I read quite a bit of true crime but have been put off by most of it lately until this. I’m looking forward to her continued work.

Different dialogue than most

This was a really great book. It felt a bit like I was a voyeur peeking into someone’s life. The dialogue was real in a way I haven’t read in other places. The narrator was great.

Historia
Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told, she's beginning to miss London. And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married fascinates Susan and piques her editor's instincts.

Painfully slow
Revisado: 12-22-23
I really enjoyed the first one but I think this sequel didn’t add anything to the story. It was painfully slow and boring. Unnecessarily complicated. I like a thoughtful and complicated story but this was complicated for complicatedness sake and fussy. It took me a few weeks to finish this because I didn’t have the drive to keep listening. Overall, a “meh” from me.

Beautifully woven
Revisado: 03-09-23
I listen to a lot of books and podcasts but this one made me slow down. I felt like I needed to give the characters their time and space to tel me their stories. This book was heartbreakingly beautiful. It isn’t a fast paced adventure, so don’t come expecting that. I wish I could read it again for the first time. I savored every bit.

Meh…
Revisado: 10-27-22
It’s not bad. And I appreciate the personal story that she shares in the afterward. But TBH, the writing is superficial and bland. I can’t dissuade anyone but I also wouldn’t strongly recommend the book either 🤷🏻♀️
