This book is excellent! The new reader is very good except I don’t like her voice for Holmes. I hope Laurie continues this series.

This is the start of an excellent series
Revisado: 02-27-21
This is the start of the most exciting series I have listened to in quite some time. In this book the author introduces you to the main characters and they solve an intriguing mystery.
I like the narrator and she is the reason I stumbled across this series. I enjoyed her readings of the Lady Darby Mystery series.

Historia
Peacetime has brought little respite for Verity Kent. Intrigue still abounds, even within her own family. As a favor to her father, Verity agrees to visit his sister in Wiltshire. Her once prosperous aunt has fallen on difficult times and is considering selling their estate. But there are strange goings-on at the manor, including missing servants, possible heirloom forgeries, and suspicious rumors - all leading to the discovery of a dead body on the grounds. While Verity and her husband, Sidney, investigate this new mystery, they are also on the trail of an old adversary.

Excellent Series
Revisado: 02-27-21
This is one of the most exciting series I have listened to in quite some time and I have listened to over 500 audibles – most mysteries / thrillers.
This is a dynamic series with each book building upon the last. We get to know the main characters in more depth and the author does an excellent job portraying the survivor guilt and PSTD of post WWI soldiers. Also, the anger felt by women who are ‘forced’ to return to pre-war society expectations. The war allowed women to show their potential in a working environment; after the war women were expected to return to their roles as mothers and housewives.
The story line will is thrilling and engaging and I can not wait for the next book in the series. I like the narrator and she is the reason I stumbled across this series. I enjoyed her readings of the Lady Darby Mystery series

Historia
An astonishing tip from a grateful ex-convict seems implausible - but Inspector Ian Rutledge is intrigued and brings it to his superior at Scotland Yard. Alan Barrington, who has evaded capture for 10 years, is the suspect in an appalling murder during Black Ascot, the famous 1910 royal horse race honoring the late King Edward VII. His disappearance began a manhunt that consumed Britain for a decade. Now, it appears that Barrington has returned to England, giving the Yard a last chance to retrieve its reputation and see justice done.

He only asks them to help him navigate Jacob's Island, a creepy mass of decrepit buildings where he will hand off a large sum of money in exchange for her life. As Monk follows leads, it seems inevitable one of his own men has betrayed him.

I had forgotten how horrible the last book was until I finished chapter one. I was ready to return this book by chapter 4 but continued to listen. The story did get better but the ending was abrupt and disappointing. I am done with the Monk series.

Historia
When a Hungarian immigrant is dismembered near London's River Thames, Commander Monk is called to the eerie scene, where 16 candles surround the corpse. As identical murders pop up around the city, Monk confronts the unsettling options: could it be the work of a secret society? A serial madman? Or is a xenophobic Brit targeting foreigners? A local doctor who speaks Hungarian from his days on the battlefield may be able to help, but his own struggles with post-traumatic stress have left his memory in shambles.

Revisado: 10-04-17
I had to force myself to finish it – it was so drawn out with multiple repeating of Hester’s experience of the Crimean War, much repeated verbatim from earlier books. I have enjoyed the Monk series both in written form and audible. This book was very poorly written and not proof read. Monk calls Scuff “Will” before Scuff has even told him about his wish to be called “Will”. This is only one example of poor writing.
