Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Meacham wrecks his own book
Revisado: 04-19-25
I devour books about the presidency, American history, and the Civil War in particular. This is a good book, and I learned some things about our greatest president — and alongside Washington — the greatest American who ever lived.
But the author did himself two great disservices:
1. He chose to narrate it himself. Meacham is a good writer, but a lousy, boring, monotone speaker. It made finishing this otherwise thoughtful book a chore.
2. Presumably to be in keeping with his recent (circa December 2020) overt political partisanship, Meacham is so overcome with political correctness as to whitewash history via the language of the time. To wit: the “ N WORD” is substituted by the author — over and over again — for the actual word that was in common usage at the time. No civilized American glorifies the term, but if you’re a historian clutching pearls at 19th Century American colloquialisms, Jon, hire an actor to read the damn thing.

Historia
Mike Campbell was the lead guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from the band’s inception in 1976 to Petty’s tragic death in 2017. His iconic, melodic playing helped form the foundation of the band’s sound, as heard on definitive classics like “American Girl,” “Breakdown,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “Learning to Fly” and “Into the Great Wide Open.”

Historia
It's 1977. Ike and Lucy, Senator Charlie and Margaret Marder's kids, are grown up—and in trouble. US Marine Ike has gone somewhat off the grid, working on Evel Knievel's pit crew in Montana, when—after a bar fight—he has to flee a neo-Nazi gang and seek refuge in the woods with a group of Vietnam veterans. Lucy, a reporter, has become the star of the brand-new Washington DC tabloid, the Sentinel, and is breaking all sorts of stories about a serial killer and falling in with the Lyons, the wealthy family that owns the newspaper.

Sad we can no longer return books
Revisado: 08-19-23
The story is decent, but the female reader makes it unlistenable. Why does she regularly drop into such a low whisper that I have to adjust the volume constantly.
She’s awful.

Historia
Assassination has been dramatized by literature and politicized by infamous murders throughout history, and for Robert Baer, one of the most accomplished agents to ever work for the CIA, it's a source of endless fascination, speculation, and intrigue. Over several decades, Baer served as an operative, from Iraq to New Delhi and beyond; notably, his career was the model for the acclaimed movie Syriana.

Historia
The Talmud says: “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel’s DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small....

Historia
Six close friends shaped the role their country would play in the dangerous years following World War II. They were the original best and brightest, whose towering intellects, outsize personalities, and dramatic actions would bring order to the postwar chaos, and whose strong response to Soviet expansionism would leave a legacy that dominates American policy to this day. In April 1945, they converged to advise an untutored new president, Harry Truman.

Such a great story about…

…the titans of early American Cold-War policy.
The author’s voice is fine. The reason he gets 3 stars?
He sounds to be American. (Canadian is certainly possible, but still.)
It’s a distraction when there are 10-12 words the narrator blatantly mispronounces. Words like:
Stalin
covert
forte
And a good 9-10 others. It drains a tad of credibility from Isaacson & Thomas, who deserve better.

It’s a great story, but the narrator’s weird cadence is distracting.
Revisado: 04-27-22
About every fourth sentence, it sounds like they had to edit in the last few words. It’s annoying.
And it’s not unique to this book. I have a bio of Eisenhower read by the same guy, and he has the same, weird verbal tic.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

A thoughtful, insightful work.
Revisado: 08-03-20
It illustrates the long-held and erroneous assumption that all US administrations have: that the Israelis must make concessions to Arabs, lest American-Arab relations suffer.
Ross was prophetic. The book was published before the Iran nuclear deal re-oriented the postures of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, et. al. regarding Israel.
