As I walked back through the City, my mood was moderately elevated. This appointment did not displease me nearly as much as I pretended. Like most Romans I abhorred the very thought of sea duty, but this was one of the rare occasions when I was looking forward to getting away from Rome..... For years I had complained of the disorder of the City, and now that it was gone, I found that I missed it. All the peace and quiet seemed unnatural. I did not expect it to last.- Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger in SPQR IX: The Princess and the Pirates.

Maybe helmet off might be better. The writing is excellent, especially regarding characters and having an eye for detail. The plots are fun but having to do it all in what one might call a Roman idiom(s) makes it worthy of the 5th star. You keep writing them and I’ll keeping buying them and reading them.

Historia
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

Well I bet you get enough private jokes, but in my family which came to Massachusetts in the 1660, pirates were a real thing and catch’ ‘em was too. Great book.

Rick Atkinson recounts the first 21 months of America’s violent war for independence. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world’s most formidable fighting force. Full of riveting details and untold stories, The British Are Coming is a tale of heroes and knaves, of sacrifice and blunder, of redemption and profound suffering. Rick Atkinson has given stirring new life to the first act of our country’s creation drama.

Thought I knew it all, but I didn’t. Thus, I learned alot. The narrator was fantastic the longer the book went the he was.
So where are the other books. Either write and publish them, or stop saying it’s a trilogy, because it’s not.

Well written, well read (very well), excellent story, and I’ve got say these books make my day. They are extraordinary-who brings back a character 300 to give him a chance each to do it better and eventually get it right. Shawn is a true poet-warrior and we are lucky and grateful that he is. Way to dear Inmon, way to go.

Historia
In AD 476, the last of Rome's emperors, known as "Augustulus", was deposed by a barbarian general, the son of one of Attila the Hun's henchmen. With the imperial vestments dispatched to Constantinople, the curtain fell on the Roman empire in Western Europe, its territories divided among successor kingdoms constructed around barbarian military manpower. But, if the Roman Empire was dead, Romans across much of the old empire still lived, holding on to their lands, their values, and their institutions.

Now that is a telling
Revisado: 06-12-22
Not since the stylists of the easily 1960s has any author really put some zing into his story telling. Indeed this is excellent history, sociology, and forensic anthropology - Peter does not lack for through and complete scholarship, but this guy has a way with words, which when combined with this exact narrator makes for a perfect audible book. I learned quite a bit and ruined a few shirts snorting all over myself. C’mon Audible, do another. Do a medieval vs. Middle Ages book - it’s en vogue. Anything something. This talent is to good to waste.

A giant of archaeology, Colin Renfrew has immeasurably improved our understanding of human history. In this passionately argued work, he offers a concise summary of prehistory - human existence that predates the development of written records - while challenging the very definition of prehistory itself.

How late in day are we
Revisado: 03-09-22
The fundamental problem with the subject matter: "the philosophy (system theory wise) of prehistory", is the framework put together (theory of) to define it and use it to explain things. While the author believes he has made a case for the criteria & theory, I find this is not so. Second from the time this book was published new information, mostly undermines much that is said in this book. Specifically when modern humans arrived in Europe, Neanderthals DNA, (and others), early art found in other places, etc., etc., Not mentioning Jared Diamonds work is a sin, and take swipes at the concept of memes is childish. You don’t have to like reality, but you do have to accept it. Further as a neurologist (banker too) not understanding how memory and cognition occurs is another mistake. Lastly there is too my much begging the question and without assent simple plowing ahead on somethings a reasonable person can differ with. An excellent of how to write an overview of a difficult subject. But, told exceptionally. (Audible part)

Historia
The 15th century saw the longest and bloodiest series of civil wars in British history. The crown of England changed hands five times as two branches of the Plantagenet dynasty fought to the death for the right to rule. Now, celebrated historian Dan Jones describes how the longest reigning British royal family tore itself apart until it was finally replaced by the Tudors. Some of the greatest heroes and villains in history were thrown together in these turbulent times.

Finally, I understand
Revisado: 02-11-22
As Dan Jones, in paraphrasing others, history is written by the winners, or it is their story we know, not the truth. Dan does an excellent job of writing a modern history using modern methods to get very close to what happened, at least in the time/space allotted. Oddly, even from when this book was published we still know more, particularly about Richard 3 and the Henry 7, 8, & Elizabeth. All were psychopaths and in pretty much the same way. The Middle Ages has recently been defined as 476 CE to 1492 CE. English madness runs from the Romans to the Vikings to themselves in the end. If you like history this book is essential and fun to read. What more could you want? A great history book.

Historia
Los Angeles is a city of sunlight, celebrity, and possibility. The L.A. often experienced by Homicide Lt. Detective Milo Sturgis and psychologist Alex Delaware, is a city of the dead. Early one morning, the two of them find themselves in a neighborhood of pretty houses, pretty cars, and pretty people. The scene they encounter is anything but. A naked young man lies dead in the street, the apparent victim of a collision with a moving van hurtling through suburbia in the darkness. But any thoughts of accidental death vanish when a blood trail leads to a nearby home.

Revisado: 02-10-22
As I listen to the excellent narration, the plot drifted away, Milo and Alex seemed out of sorts, the whole book seemed out of sorts, and wham. I never saw it coming. What an fantastic setup and twist. Almost a noir, in that the answer is, Alex just because. Keep it up. Don’t stop now.

A breakthrough in the history of writing
Revisado: 02-04-22
Why not? This book is exceptional Terry Mancour and for each of the genres he throughly and wonderful trespasses on. I have no doubt his goal was simply to tell a good tell, but this book and book 13 are as good Sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, horror, historical fiction, some real quantum physics (my job) magic realism, and revenge-like-Eastwood. The author is on a real roll here and I can not stress how good a story this is and how well it is told. I can’t say why because I’d only be revealing all the surprise. On the surface is a running discourse on prediction of future events, but the events of the story unfold to undermine the technique to criticize used to analyze prediction itself - except in one way Minalan’s mind. I read it straight through and then listened to it. Then wanted more. I always want more, but this time, it burns (to borrow a phrase). This is as good as it gets. John Lee is amazing as well, Terry do not replace him.

Key West Sunsets
Revisado: 10-22-21
Unlike John, I am not in love with the main character but could have been if she ever once by the authors hand did something anything out of kindness rather than a sense of duty. I don’t have a 5 star system I have a three. 1 star worth reading/listening to ✓ 2 stars for doing something artistic in character, set or plot. 3. Re-readable. So it’s a solid 1.5 Stars by my reckoning. John can be a great story teller when he puts the effort in. I have read all his books, returned none, so I support the art & the artist. It’s worth reading or listening to. Character, setting (except the part about Ann Arbor, with is great), are ok, not bad not great, but passable. The third act somewhat redeems the whole affair so all’s well that ends well.
