This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Characters, heart, fascinating every day life in this universe

So good. This series kept getting better and better. I'm relieved there are three more with the same main character, though a different series. It's good there are only three more. I'm not getting much done or much sleep.

Cozy sci-fi
Revisado: 07-29-24
Given the state of the world, I appreciate the heck out of Nathan Lowell. I absolutely love "The Wizard's Butler" so I tried this series. Nothing much happens, and it's lovely! Good people, kindness, respect, ethics -- I'm making it sound saccharine, and it is just a bit. Such a relief!
The world-building is it's weakness. Though set some three hundred years in the future, there is little that is different from now, in language, customs, or technology but that the merchant ships are space ships rather than ocean going. I decided to forgive all of that because the characters are engaging and the story so peaceful. If you need refuge from the world in an interesting place with people you would like to know, this is that place!

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

What fun! I'm not usually a fantasy reader but this one caught my eye, and I 'm so glad it did! With a fresh story line, excellent heroes - I love stories about good people rising to the occasion - and a satisfying end, I am completely happy! Next up, more by this author!

You know those books you don't want to end? This was one for me. The characters, setting, plot, everything worked for me. Loved the main character and her attitude, loved her boss, and, especially, the setting. All verly well done. Characters showed growth, made choices real people would make, and the ending was just as it should be.
Loved it!

Concluded one mystery with unlikeable characters and an obvious perpetrator, spent the last few minutes setting up a cliffhanger. Hate that. Write a whole story. Great narrator did the best he could.

Not so much a story as a series of vignettes about a group of workers in space. If you need a friendly place to visit, where everyone's differences are respected, everyone loves everyone else, and not much happens, then this is a pleasant listen. Bit saccharine.

Summer, 1947. Kate Herrick, a war widow, returns to her childhood home for a final visit before the house is sold. As Kate uncovers an old secret that haunts the home she thought she knew, she is forced to confront a dark truth from her own past.... Beyond the weedy garden with its riot of rose bushes, nothing had changed. And someone was crossing the bridge to approach the garden gate. Someone I knew well....

Lovely story, but ...
Revisado: 09-23-23
I've been a fan of Mary Stewart's since I was a teenager, which is a long time ago now. I have read every word that she's written but have recently begun listening to Audible versions. All of them have been excellent except this one. The squeaky, screechy voices used by the narrator for almost all the women except the main character are annoying to listen to and completely unnecessary. Over-dramatization just gets in the way of telling the story.

I admit I didn't listen to all of this. I couldn't. Caricature characters, absurd motivations, and a plot right out of I don't even know what, maybe B horror movies? Several of them. And even an incongruous Italian lover! The end goes beyond absurd to disgusting. I could sputter on about it but it's not worth it. I've returned it. Now I'm going to go wash my hands.

Historia
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 01-14-23
Charmingly frustrating? Frustratingly charming? The heroine here is on the autism spectrum, though high functioning. So high functioning that the difficulties and misunderstandings she has seem very unlikely. The heroine is charming - but almost no one in her life recognizes it. She understands and copes with a great deal - but is blind to the actions of others that seem so blatantly obvious that the story requires a great deal of suspension of disbelief to get through it. Then there's the almost act-of-god business when she has big troubles and the twist at the end that is highly unlikely given her propensities throughout the story. We are to believe that she has gained great insight through her experiences. Perhaps she has.
In any case, it's different. Well outside the norm for cozy mysteries. So there is that.
