Historia
In 11 sharp, surprising stories, Neel Patel gives voice to our deeply held stereotypes and then slowly undermines them. His characters, almost all of who are first-generation Indian Americans, subvert our expectations that they will sit quietly by. We meet two brothers caught in an elaborate web of envy and loathing; a young gay man who becomes involved with an older man whose secret he could never guess; three women who throw off the pleasant agreeability society asks of them; and, in the final pair of linked stories, a young couple struggling against the force of community gossip.

Avoid it at all costs
Revisado: 05-12-22
It’s only a 6 hour long book and even still I can’t finish it. Every single story reads the same, and it doesn’t help that the narrator has no inflection. For a book about breaking Indian stereotypes, they seem very reinforced here. I have gained no new perspective, understanding, or even enjoyment from this book.
Im also rolling my eyes at how women are described. “Doughy bosom” ugh. Avoid it.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Unnecessary S.A.
Revisado: 01-18-21
If you can get past the first chapter, this is a great novel. The first chapter uses vulgar words, which don’t bother me when they are sprinkled in for good reason. Here, it just seemed out of place and like a middle school student learning the “c” word for the first time. (T.W. & spoiler) Also, I really didn’t need to hear about the sexual assault of an 8 year old, which did not tie into the rest of the story at all. It wasn’t written as a cruel and heart-breaking event, rather as a sexual awakening. Written from a man’s perspective, this was creepy and sinister. This chapter was starkly out of place in comparison to the rest of the novel.
After the first chapter, it becomes PG-13 at most. The story develops well, and it’s a good read. I turned the narrator up to 1.7 and that helped with the slow, monotone voice.
