Historia
Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Does justice to a classic
Revisado: 02-11-25
Rereading (listening) to Dune after seeing the movies allowed me to tune in to the quality of Herbert’s writing and the many subtle elements he built into the story that could never be captured on screen

Real, conflicted and loving relationships
Revisado: 11-20-24
Many people have written that this is their favorite book by Guy Gavriel Kay. I have only read (listened to) six of his books so far, but I would have to agree with their analysis. All of his stories have some interesting historic relevance and great scene descriptions; this one has the deepest dive into the characters’ internal and emotional life that I have seen so far. Enjoyable on many levels:)

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Interesting twist on Huckleberry Finn
Revisado: 09-15-24
I could listen to the narrator all day. The story contains many opportunities to consider race and racism from the perspective of a slave. some of the dialogue, including interior monologue, does not ring true for the period of time the story is set in. But I guess that’s why they call it artistic license.

Historia
In Navola, a city-state dominated by a handful of influential families, business is power, and power is everything. For generations, the di Regulai family—merchant bankers with a vast empire—has nurtured tendrils that stretch to the farthest reaches of the known world. And though they claim not to be political, their wealth has bought cities and toppled kingdoms. Soon, Davico di Regulai will be expected to take the reins of power from his father and demonstrate his mastery of the games of Navolese diplomacy. But in Navola, strange and ancient undercurrents lurk behind the gilt and grandeur.

Slow to start, but ultimately a very satisfying read/listen
Revisado: 07-15-24
This is not as compelling as Water Knife (Bacigalupi’s masterwork so far IMO) and the pace is sometimes slow as he wanders into describing details of details, BUT it is a promising beginning to a new series with an author who has established writing chops.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

A hidden gem!
Revisado: 07-01-24
Another reviewer said this book would be a considered a “classic“ if it had been written by a better known author. I couldn’t agree more. This tangled tale of good/evil devils and angels during the time of Plague in France could have been simplistic and moralistic in the hands of a less talented writer, but Buehlman weaves a complex and compelling historical/magical tale that you won’t easily forget. I would have found this hidden gem if I hadn’t first read and loved “The Black Tongue Thief” by Buehlman, another story that is hard to describe but shouldn’t be missed!
