Awful narrator
Revisado: 02-28-25
I don’t generally comment too much on narrators because I know that they do occasionally change when there is a long series. However, this one was almost a return for me because the narrator’s lisp was so distracting. I’ve been listening to the entire series in order and didn’t want to skip this one so I stuck with it. I’m really unhappy to see that he’s doing the next book in the series as well.
The story itself was a good one, as always, but I’m not sure why they would hire a narrator with such a lisp. It changed the entire feeling of the Elvis and Joe characters for me. I hope that they will not use this narrator again in the future. If you don’t mind that, you will like the story. The plot is a good one.

Historia
Once upon a time, a historical romance author created a family.... But not just any family. Eight brothers and sisters, assorted in-laws, sons and daughters, nieces and nephews (not to mention an overweight corgi), plus an irrepressible matriarch who's a match for any of them.... These are the Bridgertons: less a family than a force of nature. Through eight best-selling novels, listeners laughed, cried, and fell in love. But they wanted more.

Good narrator but wrong for this
Revisado: 07-28-24
Obviously fans just want more, more, more, so the fact that there’s nothing new or earth shattering doesn’t make me love this less. It’s just great to reconnect with our favorites. Unfortunately the switch from the original narrator to this harsher male voice spoiled it for me. Too loud and often too harsh. He’s a good reader but doesn’t fit these characters.

Great story but terrible sound (2024)
Revisado: 07-17-24
This is a terrific story with great narration. Sadly I could barely hear it whether through phone speaker, bluetooth speaker, or ear buds. I don’t know if it was just my copy because I purchased the entire collection at once and was not able to return this one by the time I got to listening to it. This was purchased in June 2024. As I said, wonderful story just as they all are in this series but really spoiled by the sound.

All fluff, no filler
Revisado: 05-09-24
Fans of this series will enjoy all the interactions of our favorite characters. That said, the story is so lame. It goes back-and-forth between three different investigations and doesn’t devote enough time to any of them. Aside from a few advancements in character development, this is one you could easily skip.

Give it time
Revisado: 03-14-24
I really enjoyed this book even though I had started to have doubts after the action packed beginning. It grabs you right from the start, and then suddenly it looks like you’re going to have just 5 to 6 hours of nothing but romance. Don’t be fooled. Be patient. It picks up again and turns into a really good mystery. The narrator is terrific.

narrator ruins female lead
Revisado: 02-11-24
This is on par with most fluff romance novels. I prefer Nora Roberts’ mysteries over these earlier books she put out. Since I purchased a lot of them without realizing they were just fluff pieces, I’m making my way through them and enjoying them for what they are - predictable but pleasant enough. This narrator does a better male voice than female, which is very strange. She narrated another I listened to a few days ago and it was the same thing. For some reason she makes the female leads sound like tough old pioneer women, bellowing everything they say. It’s extremely annoying. The male characters are done well, and her reading in general is decent. It’s just very off putting to have one character yelling all her lines. I’ll be more mindful of who’s narrating from now on.

Get to the point!
Revisado: 02-09-24
As I said in the title, this is one of those stories you listen to for hours, and it doesn’t get to the point until the last 30 minutes. if you like the sort of book that has very little substance, with every other scene being how the main characters bed each other, you’ll love this one. The characters are likable, and the setting is lovely. I just prefer Nora Roberts when she’s writing a good mystery. I made the mistake of stocking up on a lot of these earlier books of hers, not realizing they aren’t much more than sex scenes and fluff. There’s always room for romance, but I don’t want an entire book of it. For that reason, I found it boring. if that’s the genre, you prefer, you would like this one.

Boring and Annoying
Revisado: 02-06-24
Unfortunately I spent a lot of credits stockpiling Nora Roberts books because I love so many of her series. I had no idea that she’d written such lame romances like this one. All fluff and no point. I purchased it so long ago that returning was not an option or I would have immediately. It’s boring and lacks any substance. The voice the narrator uses for the main male character is creepy and sleazy sounding. Don’t waste your credits.

Painful narration
Revisado: 01-17-24
I wish I could say I enjoyed this book, but the narration is AWFUL and stole all the joy from the experience. I understand that sometimes a narrator isn’t available to complete a series and someone new must step in, but if you need to make a change they should at least TRY to somewhat voice the characters like the previous, established narrator did. For the first 6 books of this series we had characters who all sounded what they are - late 20’s, early 30’s, fairly hip people. With this 7th book, all the men sound like stuffy old English butlers from a B movie, and even Viv sounds like an old, snobby woman. Only Scarlett sounds like a young woman. I’m so angry that I can barely assess how I feel about the story itself. I don’t think these Hat Shop Mysteries come close to equaling the Cupcake or Library series in any fashion, but I love Jenn McKinlay and have stuck with them. I think this 7th story is one of the better mysteries of this series, but who can say when it’s so painful to even listen? Please, if this series is going to live on, bring back Karyn O’Bryant or at least someone talented enough to sound somewhat like the characters we’ve come to know and love. Right now I’m stuck between wanting to return the title and wondering about the outcome. Ugh.

Decent Story-Annoying Narrator
Revisado: 01-05-24
The story is what you’d expect of Jenn McKinlay, a lot of fluff but entertaining enough. I enjoyed the narration of both the Cupcake and Library series, but this narrator was distracting to me. She has a clear voice, but her cadence and accenting of random words mid sentence kept pulling me out of the story.
