Historia
When Rozakajin, road-weary bandit and army deserter, spots a hapless blond young man in a country inn with an intriguing treasure map, he thinks he’s scouted an easy and lucrative victim. Attaching himself to odd traveler Penric seems simple enough, but when Roz’s old enemies catch up from behind, his plans take a turn for the much worse. When Pen’s claim that I never travel alone proves true in ways Roz never imagined, his world becomes more frightening still—but also much wider than he’d ever dared to dream.

Yet another great Bujold/Gardner audio book
Revisado: 11-07-24
This was a great Penric tale and Grover Gardner does his usual fantastic audiobook job. He’s the only audiobook reader who I will get the audiobook of rather than the print book because his reading brings so much to the story

Lindy West is a constant delight. I enjoy listening to books that are read by the author, and this is one of them. West does a great job bringing her text to life. It's worth it just to hear her Love, Actually essay, but the other ones are a hoot as well. She has impeccable taste and a great ability to skewer bad movies.

This is a terrific classic Christie. Suspenseful until the end, even if you already know the ending. Dan Stevens has a wonderful voice and did a great job bringing the story to life.

Historia
With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money 10 years ago. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to 15 months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187-424 - one of the millions of women who disappear "down the rabbit hole" of the American penal system.

A great read
Revisado: 08-06-18
By chance, I read this before the Netflix series came out, and while I like the series, the book provides some valuable perspective on Kerman's actual prison experiences. Everything was exaggerated for dramatic effect in the series, but in this book, the reader gets to know the actual inmates that Kerman was incarcerated with. It augments the TV series, and stands on its own as a view of the American prison system.

Them: Adventures with Extremists

Narración:

Historia
Them began as a book about different kinds of extremists, but after Jon had got to know some of them - Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen - he found that they had one oddly similar belief: that a tiny, shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. In Them, Jon sets out, with the help of the extremists, to locate that room. The journey is as creepy as it is comic, and along the way Jon is chased by men in dark glasses, unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp, and more.

Contains valuable information
Revisado: 08-06-18
Jon Ronson is, as always, delightful. His British humor is brought out in his reading of his book, so I always prefer to get his books on tape rather than in print, as so much is lost without his verbal delivery. As a gonzo journalist, he finds interesting stories and brings out their absurdity while conveying good information (if a little tweaked to emphasize the humor of the situation, even very dark humor). But Ronson's adventures with extremists really take a dark turn when you look at how out-there and extreme these people were when he wrote this, and how much more mainstream they've become since that time. It was Ronson who helped to give Alex Jones his first great exposure when they together infiltrated the Bohemian Grove. While Ronson merely exposes the ridiculousness of the rituals of those in power, Alex Jones ran with the story as a sensationalist exposure of alleged human sacrifice (it wasn't), which garnered him numerous crazy followers. Jones's popularity is not Ronson's fault, but Ronson's early relationship with Jones, as discussed here, gives the reader insight into Jones. Likewise Ronson's history of Ruby Ridge provides insight into some far-right extremism in the US. He debunks a lot of their paranoid rantings, too. He likewise provides insight into other extremist movements around the globe.

Historia
Rebecca Mead was a young woman in an English coastal town when she first read George Eliot's Middlemarch, regarded by many as the greatest English novel. After gaining admission to Oxford and moving to the United States to become a journalist, through several love affairs, then marriage, and family, Mead read and reread Middlemarch. The novel, which Virginia Woolf famously described as "one of the few English novels written for grown-up people," offered Mead something that modern life and literature did not.

Great for fans of English Literature
Revisado: 08-06-18
I've been a George Eliot fan for decades, and this book helps her to take her place in the pantheon of great English novelists and influential Victorians. This was a very engaging read, not dry or boring at all. Eliot was a dynamic, impressive person and this interesting read brings that out quite well. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Eliot, and furthermore I think anyone interested in Jane Austen will find Eliot to be another author that they will grow to love if they give her novels (particularly Middlemarch and Daniel Deronda) a read.

Better than the Series
Revisado: 08-06-18
I read this book after I heard about the TV series. It's difficult to compare them because they are so different, but in the end I liked this a lot better than the TV series because this was all non-fiction and the TV series added lots of subplots and stories out of their imagination. The real-life anecdotes that were in this book were far more appealing and interesting to me. I got much more of an idea of who Masters and Johnson were. Masters comes off as... well, not a great person, not even a good person. He had an obsession, he fulfilled it. Virginia Johnson, on the other hand, really shines in this book, and I was left with the impression that this research never would have gotten off the ground without Johnson's superb people skills, being able to draw out truth from people, and being able to convince people to engage in experiments that they would otherwise avoid. What surprised me, though, was that some of the more astonishing revelations of the TV series were in this book, and really happened. And this also included some fascinating anecdotes and findings that never made it to the TV series. I recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the TV series.

Lives up to the hype
Revisado: 08-06-18
The movies are of course iconic, so I wasn't sure that the book could live up to the movies' quality and reputation. Well, it does. This was unputdownable and I listened to it obsessively until it was over. Of particular note is that this version has a full cast of great actors reading this, which really adds to the quality and enjoyment. The book itself is a delight--the characters and story are very involving and interesting. The movies come pretty much straight from the book, with very little that is in the book not appearing in the movies (though much of Godfather Part 2 is not in this book, with the exception of the flashback scenes of Godfather Part 2, which are in this book). They just cut out a couple small subplots that follow peripheral characters. If you enjoyed the movies, I highly recommend this book, and this version of it, with the full cast (just to be clear, the actors reading the book are not the same ones as in the films).
