A great ensemble cast of characters
Revisado: 05-03-24
This is a great story, not action packed, but well crafted. I liked the growth of all of the characters.

Historia
For Dee Kwan, every day is the perfect day. No, really. She has a house she loves, a job she adores, and a ridiculously attractive “nemesis” who never seems to mind when she wins their favorite online game. How can life possibly get better? (It can’t, obviously. It can only get much, much worse.) Soon Dee is forced to share her adorably cozy home with her parents and estranged grandmother. Then she’s tossed into the deep end at work, tasked with cleaning up a scandal for the intimidatingly chic luxury fashion firm Celeste. If that weren’t enough, she discovers her hot nemesis works there, too.

It’s a very full story, and all of the characters grow.

On occasion I thought the reader sounded like AI. Sometimes she spoke too fast. Overall I loved the book!

Historia
It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. A decade-old cold case—their favorite kind--leads them to a local news legend and a murder with no body and no answers. Then a new foe pays Elizabeth a visit. Her mission? Kill or be killed. Love the book, but too much whispering.
Revisado: 05-08-23
The book is interesting, fun and poignant. I did not like the new reader, because she whispered too much. At times that made it very hard to listen to. The original reader managed to balance Joyce’s diary musings with normal introspective voice. I question whether the director helped the reader as they should have. The reader was otherwise competent.

Why should distinguished Edwardian Cabinet minister Edwin Straford resign at the height of his career? Why does the woman he loves so suddenly reject him? Why, 70 years later, should people go to such lengths to prevent the truth coming out?

An old favorite, beautifully read
Revisado: 09-01-22
I read this book back in the 80’s when it first came out. It set me off to read all of Robert Goddard’s other books. I was concerned that if I listened to it now it would loose some of its luster in my memory. It did not. I’m so happy that Mr Shelley did the reading. It was perfect! On a side note: A year after I first read Past Caring, I had such a craving to read something else by this author. I couldn’t remember his name, just the title. I went to the bookstore and searched for Past Caring so that I could make the connection and find another book by this author. I searched every section, and read the back of countless books. Disappointed, I chose a book that looked like it would satisfy my yearning. It was winter, and while sitting in my car warming the engine, I took out my new book to thumb through it. Inside the front I read, Past Caring by Robert Goddard. That remains my favorite serendipitous moment.

Historia
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

I wish I could take back every 5 star review I have ever given and have this one stand alone. I know this book would not be for everyone, because the emotions are deep and raw. If you are in the right place and are brave, you should read it. Simply beautiful!

So many unanswered questions!
Revisado: 04-10-20
My biggest complaint with the book, was that the most important aspect of the book remained unanswered. I re-listened to the last half hour of the book to see if I had missed something, because it ended without resolving the problem. Spoiler alert:
They didn't fix the thing, and if he had gone down hill so fast in 4 months ... I was disappointed with that. I did think she should have given more story time and details to the other characters. The book would have been so much stronger.

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Same great characters, weaker story than usual
Revisado: 10-31-15
What made the experience of listening to The Long Way Home the most enjoyable?
The characters are wonderful. The story did not hold up to the usual standards
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Things would not have turned out as they did if they had not gone looking in the first place. There would have been a happily ever after. Their search set things out of balance.
What does Ralph Cosham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He's a very good performer. Each character is well developed and recognizable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Ruth's wisdoms are my favorites.
Any additional comments?
I didn't think I could be disappointed in a Louise Penny book, but I was worn out at the end of this one. I needed a breather with another series before listening to the next book.
