Historia
An extraordinary chronicle of Venice, its people, and its grandeur Thomas Madden’s majestic, sprawling history of Venice is the first full portrait of the city in English in almost thirty years. Using long-buried archival material and a wealth of newly translated documents, Madden weaves a spellbinding story of a place and its people, tracing an arc from the city’s humble origins as a lagoon refuge to its apex as a vast maritime empire and Renaissance epicenter to its rebirth as a modern tourist hub.

Fascinating for those who have been there
Revisado: 12-17-16
Unquestionably a very well researched and written history. Narrative is easy to listen to and the comments and innuendo keep the story alive.

Historia
In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor’easter in years. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril, setting the stage for one of the most heroic rescue stories ever lived. On February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, were in the same horrifying predicament. Built with “dirty steel,” and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving the dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic’s mercy.

Hard copy would be better
Revisado: 03-07-16
I enjoyed listening but found that following the multiple choice questions and answers hard to keep track of with audio only. I'll look at a hard copy in a bookstore and perhaps buy it.

Historia
America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse in the near future. The stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city.

Interesting Prospective
Revisado: 05-25-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This book kept my interest, but somehow I felt it was too "wordy". Too much emphasis on descriptions of the equipment and things the characters were using.
If you’ve listened to books by James Wesley Rawles before, how does this one compare?
Have not listened to this author before.
What aspect of Dick Hill’s performance would you have changed?
This is my second book narrated by Dick Hill. Dick Hill should just read in his natural voice. Attempts to imitate characters voice or accents leave much to be desired. - especially women. This characterization was distracting to me.
Could you see Patriots being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No

Historia
Modernity developed only in the West - in Europe and North America. Nowhere else did science and democracy arise; nowhere else was slavery outlawed. Only Westerners invented chimneys, musical scores, telescopes, eyeglasses, pianos, electric lights, aspirin, and soap. The question is, why? Unfortunately, that question has become so politically incorrect that most scholars avoid it. But acclaimed author Rodney Stark provides the answers in this sweeping new look at Western civilization.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Concise and clearly articulated. Reader is excellent.
Any additional comments?
The author interjects his own conclusions about many historical events, but they appear to be backed up with research and facts.

Historia
Michael Cosgrove had a beautiful family, a successful career, and a lovely Southern California home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. At the age sixty, he decided to leave that all behind to sail around the world. In spite of his romanticized vision of rugged individualism and salty tales to share with his grandchildren, Cosgrove quickly realizes that sailing around the world isn’t going to be as easy as he’d imagined.

I can empathize with Cosgrove as a coastal sailor in Hawaii. Enjoyed the accurate descriptions of the places he visited. I don't think you could dream up the adventure he had - and the "End Game". A very good good read for yachties.

Exceptional historical account -
Revisado: 09-22-13
I have visited Iwo Jima and can relate to the accounts included in this book. I concur with other reviewers that the attempt to replicate speaking accents of the men interviewed is somewhat lacking.
