Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Saccharine sweet, utterly predictable, inanely cute. This book does have its audience, but I certainly don't count among their numbers.
That notwithstanding, Richard Armitage gives a great performance as always.

In the spring of 1885, 17-year-old Jessilyn Harney finds herself orphaned and alone on her family's homestead. Desperate to fend off starvation and predatory neighbors, she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, saddles her beloved mare, and sets off across the mountains to find her outlaw brother Noah and bring him home. A talented sharpshooter herself, Jess' quest lands her in the employ of the territory's violent, capricious governor, whose militia is also hunting Noah - dead or alive.

An Instant Western Classic
Revisado: 12-07-18
This is the kind of book that makes me wish I had a longer commute. Amazing writing, masterful narration. I've seen this referred to as a feminist Western. While that's a fair assessment, what makes it even more truly feminist is that it doesn't feel like the author was trying to force a message. It's just sincere, compelling writing about a girl pushed to extremes.

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

An intimate look at Steve Martin's early life
Revisado: 06-06-18
If you're looking for a full biography, you won't find it here. The focus of this memoir is Martin's journey to and through stand-up comedy. This short listen is a mix of heartfelt laughs and, at times, some painfully intimate moments in his family life.
Maybe we'll get a memoir of his later life some day. If we do, my experience with this book ensures I'll buy it.

Historia
Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

Very different narration choices
Revisado: 06-06-18
There's no disputing what an amazing narrator Dotrice was, and he will be most sincerely missed. That doesn't change the fact that he made some disappointing choices with this book.
It seems that after the long hiatus, Dotrice chose not to revisit his earlier performances in the series for consistency with character voices and pronunciations. This may not have been as big of an issue for those who had to wait for this rendition, but as a latecomer to the series trying to go more or less straight through the books, it was jarring. I had to take a short break to come to terms with those differences and try to ignore them.
That notwithstanding, this audiobook is still a great way to catch up with a very long series when it's difficult to find time to read such lengthy books.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Marvelously entertaining
Revisado: 06-06-18
Gaiman does a wonderful job weaving these stories into a more or less coherent narrative, making for a great listen all the way through. There's a freshness to these tellings that's sure to delight both those intimately familiar with Norse mythology and those coming to it for the first time.

Worth a re-listen
Revisado: 06-06-18
I've loved this story since I was a child, and it's every bit as magical on its umpteenth reading as its first. Inglis does a marvelous job balancing the levity of this children's story with the weight of its contents. This is sure to be one I'll listen to over and over again.

Interesting perspectives
Revisado: 06-06-18
I admit I didn't know much about the story of the PT-109 beyond the basics before listening to this book. Doyle manages to tell the story in a way that's both exciting and thorough. He may place a little too much importance on the event in terms of the remainder of JFK's trajectory, but that's not unexpected from a thesis like this. Very interesting to get a Japanese perspective as well.

Legendary narrator, subpar performance
Revisado: 06-06-18
As with A Feast for Crows, Dotrice's excellent narrating skills are marred by inconsistences with pronunciations and voices from the first three books. For those who had to wait years to get these books and longer for Dotrice's narration, this may have been less of an issue. As a latecomer going more straight through the series, it's jarring.
Still, this was a great way to be able to catch up with an incredibly long series I would have found it difficult to find the time to read without listening time on my commute.

Billy Crystal is 65, and he's not happy about it. In humorous chapters like "Buying the Plot" and "Nodding Off," Crystal not only catalogues his physical gripes, but offers a road map to his 77 million fellow baby boomers who are arriving at this milestone age with him. He also looks back at the most powerful and memorable moments of his long and storied life.

Don't listen unless you really love Billy
Revisado: 06-06-18
I'm a big fan of Billy Crystal, and I was excited to listen to this audiobook. I soon found it to be a frustrating mix of funny, interesting anecdotes and stale jokes complaining about old age.
The performance of some chapters before a live audience is bizarre, and they marked a tonal shift that was at times jarring. Even much of the more biographical chapters came across as conceited bragging about whom he's brushed shoulders with.
If you're willing to look past those things, you'll find a few really good laughs and some interesting trivia about Crystal's life.

The year is 1896, the place, New York City. On a cold March night New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned to the East River by his friend and former Harvard classmate Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, or "alienist." On the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge, they view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy, a prostitute from one of Manhattan's infamous brothels.

Takes time to become invested
Revisado: 06-06-18
I may have returned this book early on had I not been reading it for a book club, as there's a terrible amount of exposition.
After about 4 or 5 hours into the story, though, the plot began to pick up, and by the climax, I wasn't ready for the book to end.
It does, however, end rather abruptly, with almost the impression that Carr was eager to wrap the story up.
I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a psychological thriller as an 1890s SVU with a touch of Sherlock Holmes.
