Historia
1798, France. Nuns move along the dark corridors of a Versailles hospital where the young Sister Perpetué has been tasked with sitting with the patient who must always be watched. The man, gaunt, with his sallow skin and distended belly, is dying: they say he ate a golden fork, and that it’s killing him from the inside. But that’s not all—he is rumored to have done monstrous things in his attempts to sate an insatiable appetite…an appetite they say tortures him still.

A marvelous Baroque tale
Revisado: 05-25-24
Disgustingly brilliant! Perfectly and written and narrated. A.K. Blakemore does a perfect job balancing out the beautiful and the grotesque.

FANTASTIC

I’ve downloaded so many audiobooks with narrators being so slow and boring. I’m happy to say that Nichole Lewis is by far one of the best narrators I’ve ever heard in a long time!

Derivative, cliché, yet fun to read
Revisado: 01-21-21
Derivative, cliché, yet fun to read. Ernest Cline returns with a sequel to one of my favourite books of all time, Ready Player One. Ready Player Two feels like a sequel, starting right off its predecessors ending. Cline did an exceptional job in recapturing the first book's events, making me really excited to see what he got to offer this time. His introduction of the new technological advancement, the ONI, was enjoyable and engaging to read; and a bit eerie since it seems like an upcoming advancement. However, Cline does fall into that "cash grab" sequel. I did love how we were back with pop-cultural references; however, did it add up to anything new? Did the book bring in new ideas? Or the most plausible question might be, was this a necessary sequel? Not so much. I don't feel like Cline added anything new or expand the story for him to write a sequel. Yes, it was nice to see the gang back, and there was no expansion of the universe but more of derivation. However, if you're a full-time fan and devoter to the first book, I recommend checking it out, though if you're some who merely "liked" the first book, I don't think you'll like it as much.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Long and tedious
Revisado: 09-03-20
As an art history alumni, I strongly believed I would’ve enjoyed this historical fiction novel. There is no denying that Doerr’s writing is phenomenal, lushness, descriptive and at times, breathtaking. Other than that? The book was a snooze fest. I don’t understand why it had to be this big. It could’ve easily been condensed into 400 pages max. I wasn’t a big fan of how the chapters were formatted, skipping years and changing timelines, making it hard for readers to follow and tie events together. I mean it was obvious that Marie Laure’s and Werners storyline (the two main characters) was going to connect, but wow did it take forever. Furthermore, I did not like how this book too technical, I mean way too technical. Doerr seems to be rambling on in detail which doesn’t really add anything to the story expect increase the length of the book. I would understand if that was the case with a fantasy or sci-fi novel, but it was useless with a historical fiction since the ideas were mundane and no concepts were given. I don’t know what I expected from a historical fiction novel since this was my first, but I expected some kind of tension and political ideology from countries to be given, but I unfortunately didn’t get that. Doerr understands how to develop his characters I’ll give him that, but I didn’t seem to care for them whatsoever. My ratings on books aren’t purely based whether I liked a character or not, but honestly, I couldn’t think of a time I actually cared for a character. They seemed flatlined, dull and boring. I know this book seems to be loved by the majority and I’m so glad if your one who did. Unfortunately, this novel wasn’t really my thing and I was highly disappointed due to my high expectations.
