I have listened to this twice and will be listening to it again. I love this so much I bought a few paperback versions to share with friends and family. This is so practical and deals with the struggles we all have as we pray. Are we doing this right? What if I feel nothing? How do I pray? So much meat packed into this tiny book. I am becoming Orthodox but was very fortunate to come out of a church background in at least one church that had a strong emphasis on prayer. We met weekly for prayer. But this little book and what o am learning about prayer in the Orthodox Church just adds so much more.

If you like Michael Heiser you will like this book. I can’t say I agree with every little detail in the book but overall the big picture of what Jesus really accomplished in his life, death and resurrection is so much more than what Protestantism calls the Gospel. The more I learn about the Orthodox view of Scripture the more I want to learn from them.

This is so needed today in a world where the church so frequently has lost its heart, compassion, empathy and sense of justice.

The author reads this. He speaks very slowly at times then more normal. I put this on a faster speed. I am repeatedly disappointed that authors on end times keep failing to mention the most obvious connection, the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32 and being sung in Revelation. He missed this too. But still worth the read.

I found the narration a little off putting at first but glad I listened to the whole book. I wasn’t as familiar with the patriarchal movement but knew there were families like this out there. I was surprised by how much of this twisted teaching was in my own church I used to be heavily involved in. I had 2 church leaders use the umbrella illustration with me and my ex husband when there was abuse in my home. Somehow my lack of submission was causing the stress leading to his abusive behavior. This church was no isolated cult but a very mainstream conservative church. I did eventually sort these things out with my own study of scripture and through prayer. I did find my way out of the abuse. But it is good to hear others who also see the true Jesus of the Scriptures. Get past the over dramatized narration at first. The message is worth listening to.

My only complaint in this is she puts a wrong emphasis on the NT as if the OT is inferior and less important. While I agree that we are under a better covenant, all Scripture is God breathed and useful for instruction. Most of the NT wasn’t written yet when that statement was made and referred to the OT. It was actually the OT that was most helpful for me to recognize that God made provision for women to leave abusive marriages. So read the whole Bible. Some things are more clear in the OT than the NT. But it is all cohesive.

I wish I had read this book years ago. One thing worse than being in an abusive marriage is having the church tell you that you can’t leave it. I was aware of the provisions Moses have in the law that allowed abused or neglected wives to freed from unloving and brutal marriages. But so many say Jesus got rid of the law. Now you must stay. They effectively made Jesus my oppressor. No more liberation for those in bondage.

I am thankful that I did eventually get Biblical Counseling from a wonderful lady that gives similar instructions to this book. She was a lifeline at that time.

I highly recommend this book. But I know that for those in such marriages it would be difficult to purchase it and hide it from their spouse. I avoided buying books with such titles out of fear of him finding it and his reaction. But try to get it and hide it well. Thinking of you ladies still enduring all this. My heart goes out to you.

A must read for church leaders

Too many church leaders have failed women and children caught in the cycle of abusive marriages. Worse yet sometimes it is the pastor himself abusing in his wife. This is an egregious affront to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. May this become required reading in seminaries. May pastors who have heard the cry of the oppressed read this book and promote its message in their congregations. Having lived it there are no easy solutions but the church can and should learn how to support these women as they navigate through and out of the turmoil of these toxic relationships either through leaving safely with support. Or in the rare case of genuine repentance should SHE choose reconciliation to offer ongoing support and accountability after a long pattern of genuine repentance has been confirmed.

I have always had a difficult time embracing futurism which prevailed in most churches I have attended. The most recent was historicist. But I couldn’t quite embrace that either. Too much Scripture seemed to be pointing to a catastrophic and earth changing event in the first century. Glad I finally stumbled across preterist material. Helps me to know I am not alone in what I see in the scriptures. I gave 4 stars only because I am not in full agreement with Doug Wilson on all points. But still would highly recommend this book and other videos by him on eschatology. Love his optimism and focus on the gospel.

If you want an understanding of why some people embrace preterism stop listening to futurists explain why preterism is wrong. Hear both sides and weigh it all out. Futuristic interpretations of Revelation are actually a relatively new phenomena. This wasn’t the standard view in the church for more than a thousand years.

I only wish he had dealt more with the Song of Moses and the promised Deuteronomy curses. If people started from this framework and properly dating the book in the reign of Nero according to the Book of Revelation itself then this futuristic perspective would never have had a leg to stand on.
