Strong sequel that made me squeal with delight
Revisado: 03-31-25
Anything cute and queer already has me. This is no exception. Tobias Begley does it again. My only non-complaint is that it was more setup than payoff for most of the book. This is not bad. It only means I'm even more rabid for book 3 to come out. Can't wait. Performance-wise Neo Cihi was immaculate again. They're a perfect fit for the characters and the world

Historia
Thea is a washed-up mimic exterminator who expected more out of life, not some hero from stories. Aven is an impulsive wandering adventurer whose personal goddess is constantly getting her into trouble. Neither of them has the slightest interest in getting involved in world-shaking historical events. History doesn't care what they want, unfortunately. It's fallen right into their laps in the shape of a god-slaying weapon from a fallen civilization. Thrown together out of chance, Thea and Aven will have to learn to work together if they want to survive their pursuers.

Brilliant start to a new series: Das Kapital mit Göttern
Revisado: 02-15-25
This book had everything: magic, great characters, in-depths economic analysis of the inevitable collapse of a futures market... Mimics
In true John Bierce fashion this book incorporated tonnes of real-world scientific and social scientific information. He worked this all into a seamless critique of real world social, economic and moral issues that still reads as a brilliant fantasy novel with subtle and overt nods to his other works. I can't wait for more

Historia
Halted in advancing his legacy, Leland wants nothing more than to sit down and figure things out. Unfortunately for him, fate had other plans. Together with his two best friends, the journey continues and many more questions are raised. Just who is the Lord of Curses and why do some cower at her title of The Calamity? Why is the Huntress still following them? Why do animals like Jude so much? Is it the harmonica playing? And of course, the age-old question of who would win, the bear or the poacher?

Good but...
Revisado: 02-11-25
Not the worst I've listened to in the genre. Just a little clunky stylistically. The author needs to be more mindful of the anachronisms. They're really jarring and snap me right out of the story.
Otherwise it's fun and light.

Fun, well-written, satisfying continuation of the story. I'm looking forward to book 5. My only grip is something went weird with the recordong at the end of chapter 26.

If that wasn't enough, he needs to manage this while also making sure he is able to retain his job as a teacher. He's given his oath to nurture the next generation of witches and enchanters, and needs to make sure he's able to give them the best education he can.

A strong end to the series
Revisado: 01-31-25
Thank you Tobias Begley. This series was something I wish I had had when I was an awkward, introverted, queer teen who loved magic. And though I'm now an awkward, introverted, queer adult who still loves magic, this series has become very special to me. I can't wait to see what else you write going forward.

Redundant writing is redundant
Revisado: 01-25-25
The story is... fine (although the narrative feels a little shallow and disjointed in places). My main gripe is with the general writing style. Lots of redundant and repetitive words in sentences making it redundant and repetitive and also redundant (I am aware of what I did here).
Tess Irondale is the major redeeming factor here. Her narration got me as far as I got.

The joy these books bring me!
Revisado: 09-19-24
I think Tobias Begley is in my top 5 fantasy authors of all time. Every book is a success. This one is no exception.
The main relationship is drama-free, the characters are endearing, and everything is as queer as can be (in the best possible ways, naturally). I can't wait to see what else Tobias Begley does in concluding Evan's story and what else he has planned for this world and others.
