A Lovely Memoir
Revisado: 02-08-25
What a delightful read. Ketanji is a joy to listen to. Her deamenor reminds me a lot of Michelle Obama. Undoubtedly she is insanely accomplished and brilliant! It is evident that her parents and grandparents who poured into her and affirmed her from childhood, really paid off big time! I enjoyed learning about Justice Brown-Jackson's upbringing as much as her later professional career in this memoir. It was a nice balance. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking to learn more about becoming a judge one day, or if you're simply interested in learning about an outstanding Black women in US history. Very well done!

Historia
At the tender age of twelve, Jaleel White auditioned for the role of Steve Urkel, the socially inept genius, who was in love with his next-door neighbor, Laura. Though Steve Urkel was intended to be in only one episode, Jaleel’s indelible performance catapulted Urkel into the pantheon of American pop culture. But success can cost as much as it pays. After nine years on the popular sitcom Family Matters, Jaleel is twenty-one, a UCLA undergrad, and adjusting to a world and industry that sees him as the nasally nerd in high water pants, suspenders, and coke bottle glasses.

Growing Up Urkel
Revisado: 12-04-24
As a fan of Family Matters in the 90's, and a girl with a huge crush on Stefan Urquelle, it was a no-brainer to buy this book lol. Jaleel recounts many moments—both personal and professional about his life, and growing up as a child actor/star. The 90's were a time for him, evidenced by his many celebrity and Hollywood experiences described in his memoir. Jaleel was very detailed in his reflections, and I'm amazed by his vivid memories. You can tell he takes his craft very seriously, and has been fighting hard to be recognized for his talents in the industry. Yes, Family Matters is his claim to fame, but there is so much more about Jaleel White that he wants the world to know and appreciate. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves one day. The book was well written, and he did a great job narrating. I feel this memoir should have been written about a decade ago, as so much of the storytelling is in the past and or not so relevant or noteworthy today. In summary Jaleel is still chasing the level of fame and recognition he once had as a kid on TV, but as the chapters unfold, it's pretty evident that that ship has sailed. I think he will be much more successful if he explores other opportunities in his career apart from acting and TV.

Historia
A testament to the importance of imagination, trusting oneself, and making space for your creativity, Did Everyone Have an Imaginary Friend (or Just Me)? is a memoir of a '90s kid who confided in his imaginary sidekick to navigate everything from parallel pop culture universes, like watching Fresh Prince alongside John Hughes movies or listening to Ja Rule and Dave Matthews, to a lifetime of birthday disappointment (being a Christmas season Capricorn will do that to you) and hoop dreams gone bad.

A 90's Throwback

This was such a a fun book. Jay truly has a knack for storytelling, and is incredibly talented, creative, and imaginative. The innocence of an imaginary friend is a moment in time many people can relate to. Learning more about his upbringing through "Mikey" and unique exploration through his childhood was a treat.

Loved it! There were so many wonderful gems in this book to incorporate into my everyday life, and to help me better experience God. I was reluctant to read this book, but it changed my life, and perspective on a lot of things as a Christian. God is speaking to you everyday in a multitude of ways. If you learn how to experience God by making simple adjustments as described in this teaching, and being obedient to God, you will truly be blessed in more ways than you can possibly imagine!
