Sequel equal to the first…
Revisado: 02-22-24
These are not always easy stories, however thoroughly important and engaging throughout. This is a necessary and satisfying, equally beautiful sequel. As with all really good books I found myself musing over these characters with their outlandish plights. I’ll miss them.

Historia
From his bid to become Eudora Welty's lawn boy to the time George Plimpton offered to punch him in the nose, lineage has always been important to Rick Bass. Now at a turning point - in his midfifties, with his long marriage dissolved and his grown daughters out of the house - Bass strikes out on a journey of thanksgiving. His aim: to make a memorable meal for each of his mentors, to express his gratitude for the way they have shaped not only his writing but his life.

Delightfully Different
Revisado: 01-02-24
These stories are unique, an entertaining and interesting version of a memoir, author and book reviews, cookbook and travelogue. Top all of that with a soulful, honest voiced author/narrator and it gets 5 stars from me. Anyone might enjoy but it’s a special experience for a reader, especially of regional works. Enjoy!

A visionary work that combines speculative fiction with deep philosophical inquiry, The Sparrow tells the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a scientific mission entrusted with a profound task: To make first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end.

The story, the pathos, the beautiful words make this a substantial book in my library, even more so after this thoughtful narration. A work to contemplate for a long long time.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Meeting all expectations for an epic apocalyptic, dystopian, character led novel. It’s remains relevant without any distraction by its age. My second time through was just as fun.

Well matched
Revisado: 02-06-23
This excellent narrator is well matched for this excellent story. Having read the book already, hearing the book was everything I wanted for a second experience of one of favorites. There’s almost always something in an audible selection that irritates me a bit, but not with this narration, all good here! Enjoy!

Historia
In our unique genomes, every one of us carries the story of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration, and a lot of sex. But those stories have always been locked away - until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? Geneticists have suddenly become historians, and the hard evidence in our DNA has completely upended what we thought we knew about ourselves. Acclaimed science writer Adam Rutherford explains exactly how genomics is completely rewriting the human story - from 100,000 years ago to the present.

all around entertaining and educational
Revisado: 03-11-22
This book effectively spans human history, macro and micro with suspense and even humor. As someone very interested I found it worthwhile but suspect the casual science learning will get pulled in as well. The author’s reading is easy, balanced and pleasant. Enjoy our story!

Historia
Black Swan Green tracks a single year in what is, for 13-year-old Jason Taylor, the sleepiest village in muddiest Worcestershire in dying Cold War England, 1982. But the 13 chapters, each a short story in its own right, create an exquisitely observed world that is anything but sleepy. Pointed, funny, profound, left-field, elegiac, and painted with the stuff of life, Black Swan Green is David Mitchell's subtlest and most effective achievement to date.

Survival Story
Revisado: 08-31-21
I again relished, laughed, cried, groaned through this masterpiece depiction of growing up as an “unpopular” kid. David Mitchell and this narrator enabled me to relive and escape the surreal and dangerous period of adolescence. A perfect story if this is what you are looking for right now. Enjoy!

Historia
For at least 20,000 years, we have led not just an earthly existence, but a cosmic one. Celestial cycles drove every aspect of our daily lives. Our innate relationship with the stars shaped who we are - our art, religious beliefs, social status, scientific advances, and even our biology. But over the last few centuries we have separated ourselves from the universe that surrounds us. It's a disconnect with a dire cost.

Wow! A short but very well done history of the Cosmos and much more. Heartfelt but pleasant reading. She articulates facts and possibilities that feel so right, important for every one of us right now. High recommendation for thinkers and dreamers.

Historia
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

Interesting Story
Revisado: 05-05-21
As an outdoorsman I was intrigued by this book and enjoyed it. The overlapping narratives were helpful in learning a fuller picture of unexpected wilderness isolation. The reader was overly dramatic at times and as usual male reader falsettos of female dialogue was irritating. However, I recommend this book to anyone considering back country hiking, some good warnings for a lot of us.

Profound Story
Revisado: 02-01-21
Reading and then listening to this book has reinforced my opinion of Neal Stephenson’s genius. His attention to good science, geography, and politics is embedded so well in this beautiful story. Listen! My only reservation was with some of the female reader’s accents, a bit off putting at times. Overall this is a great listen, even for non sci fi fans.
