Historia
Jack Alston, Lord Hawthorn, would love a nice, safe, comfortable life. After the death of his twin sister, he thought he was done with magic for good. But with the threat of a dangerous ritual hanging over every magician in Britain, he’s drawn reluctantly back into that world. Now Jack is living in a bizarre puzzle-box of a magical London townhouse, helping an unlikely group of friends track down the final piece of the Last Contract before their enemies can do the same. And to make matters worse, they need the help of writer and thief Alan Ross.

Excellent Narrator, Great Writing
Revisado: 07-13-24
This has some of the most elegant erotic writing I’ve ever read. Evocative and original without eye-rolly cliches. The central relationship is so well and convincingly executed. There are also a few truly moving moments, which were unexpected but very effective. I do think there are too many characters (and magical houses) overall, but the narration is among the top 1% I’ve ever heard. I liked the first two books in the series but their narrators brought a bit of goofiness, which this one, thankfully, did not. All the characters have distinct voices but nothing feels overdone or overacted. Quiet, sexy intensity.

Historia
The story of Lilith, born into slavery on a Jamaican sugar plantation at the end of the 18th century. Even at her birth, the slave women around her recognize a dark power that they - and she - will come to both revere and fear. The Night Women, as they call themselves, have long been plotting a slave revolt, and as Lilith comes of age and reveals the extent of her power, they see her as the key to their plans.

Robin Miles is a genius narrator
Revisado: 02-27-20
I have listened to a number of books narrated by Robin Miles and they’ve all been great! This is not my favorite of those books (tossup between The Warmth of Other Suns and the Broken Earth Trilogy) but this is the best book narration I’ve ever heard, by anyone. Look, this is a violent, difficult book set in a hellscape of Jamaica during enslavement. The horror is relentless and nauseating. Miles brings these complicated sadistic characters to life in ways that are...profound. Nobody is innocent in this book, but THEY believe they are, and somehow Miles conveys that. Also, the dialects, holy mackerel - super impressive.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Magnificent performance
Revisado: 08-30-19
I listen to a lot of audiobooks. This novel is a stylistic and thematic masterpiece, but rarely have I heard a performance that’s as good as the truly wonderful source material. Really outstanding, empathetic, heartbreaking, hilarious performance from Papa Pope (for you Scandal fans).

Historia
Constance Langton grows up in a household marked by death, her father distant, her mother in perpetual mourning for Constance's sister, the child she lost. Desperate to coax her mother back to health, Constance takes her to a séance; perhaps she will find comfort from beyond the grave. But the meeting has tragic consequences. Constance is left alone, her only legacy a mysterious bequest that will blight her life. So begins this brilliant and gripping novel, a dark mystery set in late-Victorian England.

EXCELLENT story, goofy narration
Revisado: 11-07-17
This story is great! Love the three different perspectives. I guessed a few plot points relatively early on, but I was still kept in suspense the entire time. Very evocative, entertaining, and spooky, with female heroines constrained by a succession of mansplainers, ranging from the annoying to the murderous. My only complaint with this audio version is with the primary narrator. Her interpretation is...melodramatic, at times shouty, and...very hard to take seriously. I might suggest reading this the old fashioned way.
