Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

A thought provoking look at vulnerability
Revisado: 06-01-23
I did love this book. The characters were deep. There was a lot to process with each one, and I've always found Jodi Picoult's ability to 'get into their heads' astounding.
I also learned about how a transgender person feels about the process, social interaction, and acceptance of self and by others.
There's much more. Good stuff!

Historia
For years Charlie Burrell and his wife, Isabella Tree, farmed Knepp Castle Estate and struggled to turn a profit. By 2000, with the farm facing bankruptcy, they decided to try something radical. They would restore Knepp’s 3,500 acres to the wild. Using herds of free-roaming animals to mimic the actions of the megafauna of the past, they hoped to bring nature back to their depleted land. But what would the neighbors say, in the manicured countryside of modern England where a blade of grass out of place is considered an affront?

loved this!
Revisado: 04-06-22
This is a thoughtful, real journey! was right there with her! I found the research included astounding.
The reviewers who dismissed her due to her privilege missed the many valuable points she made not only about rewinding farmland, but the whys, the frustrations, the successful parts and the roadblocks. This was hard work, and they persevered for years!
The comprehensive observations and understandings she brought forth were beautiful and insightful.
I could go on!
I really loved her narration. And, I could sense her sadness that their property continues to be an island.
Highly recommend. I read many nature books, work on local reclaiming projects, and found this one compelling. It's her story - unique, and very different from any others I have read.

A fortuitous encounter at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; a father-and-son outing that echoes a childhood trauma; a harrowing haunting finally laid to rest; two young brothers at their innocent play; the recovery of a lost family keepsake; Grandma sharing a fairy tale with her granddaughter. These captured moments, ordinary though they may seem, reveal the blessings of love and hope in the course of everyday life.

Wonderful stories of the effects of Vietnam war
Revisado: 04-14-21
I honestly loved this book! The stories each took me on a journey through the effects of the Vietnam war - both during and even long after. The characters were sensitively drawn, and extremely likeable. i enjoyed each of them, and especially enjoyed the intergenerational relationships. The various points of view given about the war - both from Vietnamese and Americans was insightful.
I loved how the common thread of the Viet Nam war united the stories. I read 'Once Upon A Mulberry Field' by this author, which is also incredible, and this is a lovely companion. please know that this book can absolutely stand alone. However, I recommend reading both as the characters overlap.
I found the infusion of the vietnamese language, customs and culture very interesting. I appreciated how the parents, in the midst of wartime, made sacrifices to allow their children to experience as much joy as was possible.
Having never been personally effected by war, I found this gentle, not overly dramatic, heartfelt collection of perspectives very touching and enlightening! Kudos once again, C L Hoang!

Historia
Imagine living with a fear so visceral each day that simply walking down the street draws terror to one’s core. That’s the best case scenario for a woman on the streets of Juárez, Mexico. Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur) delivers a stunning one-woman performance that transports listeners from a New York stage to the treacherous streets of Juárez, Mexico, where thousands of women have been murdered in an ongoing epidemic of violence.

This performance was amazing! The emotions conveyed to the audience brought the horrific topic home. I'm a white girl. so many of 'us" do not want to know these realities. I do. I can't imagine what it is like to live in this lawless, corrupt place in constant fear not only for yourself, as a female, or anyone else. Well done, and excellent presentation!
