Hugh had been taught that, according to the ancient sacred writings, the Ship was on a voyage to faraway Centaurus. But he also understood this was just allegory for a voyage to spiritual perfection. Indeed, how could the Ship move, since its miles and miles of metal corridors were all there was of creation? Science knew that the Ship was all the universe, and as long as the sacred Converter was fed, the lights would continue to glow, the air would flow, and the Creator's Plan would be fulfilled.

A true sci-fi masterpiece
Revisado: 10-06-21
Unique characters, well told story, and a fascinating premise. Great classic sci-fi!
Some aspects may seem dated, but you have to consider that this was written in the 1940s and depicts a dystopian, medieval society. It's shocking how scientifically knowledgeable it is given the time in which it was written. It's also remarkably violent for the era, though this is very appropriate to the setting. It's every bit as good as Heinlein's other classic works and is well performed here by Graham Halstead.

Great story, nebulous genre.
Revisado: 07-01-20
You are expecting a silly story about a nice old lady and some G-rated spies. Do not be deceived! This book could easily be compared to Clive Cussler in its sudden actions and dangerous characters. People get shot quite often and bullets are removed from extremities twice throughout the book. The language never gets stronger than d*mn, luckily.
THAT BEING SAID, this is no trashy spy romp. If you have ever enjoyed Clive Cussler, or even Tom Clancy, you will appreciate this interesting heart-of-gold take on the usual spy cliches. I do mean heart-of-gold; Mrs Pollifax is very sweet and often found in less-than-likely situations that are perfect for "old lady magic". Speaking of unlikely situations, do not expect realism. This book doesn't have a target audience: it's pretty good, and anyone who likes fiction is likely to enjoy this.

One of a kind!
Revisado: 12-07-19
I have read eighty percent of all of Agatha Christie's books, and this one is definitely in the top ten. This book is suspenseful, dark, and unpredictable. At no point in this book was I bored or uninterested, and there is absolutely nothing I would change about this story. ONE THING: the narrator gets really quiet sometimes, so be prepared to adjust the volume sometimes.

Revisado: 09-11-19
Do you like noir,? Reread the classics. Do you like magic? Reread Harry Potter. Maybe the Dresden Files get better, but for now, this is a boring, ponderous book full of sex and drugs and some CGI magic. To be fair, the ending is very exciting, and the main character runs into some interesting (if short-lived) obstacles. It is not a fun or gripping book, but it has an occasional good moment.
The reader doesn't differentiate charecter voices hardly at all, and rarely injects any emotion into the statements he reads. He also reads in that quiet, tired voice that anyone would imagine on the hard-bitten PI, meaning you can't hear him in a car without cranking the volume up to an irritating level.
This is NOT a child-suitable book, but it's not so dirty that anyone with a weak constitution will be horrified. there are many, um, uh, *cough* sexual references, but nothing at all detailed. Gore is minimal, but present. The f-word is used only twice in the book, and "crap" is nearly always used in place of the s-word.
The story is not unpredictable, and if you pay attention and use your imagination, you will probably figure things out before the detective even has a clue.
The magic is standard, with demons and magical laws and staffs and alchemy. It's all very Harry Potter, really. There's a lot of wind gusts and blood magic, but it doesn't seem well-developed yet.
Take all of this with a grain of salt, because you may read this and love it, but I didn't, and now you know why.

Historia
Every Winter, the human population hibernates. Your name is Charlie Worthing, and it's your first season with the Winter Consuls, the committed but mildly unhinged group of misfits who are responsible for ensuring the hibernatory safe passage of the sleeping masses. You are investigating an outbreak of viral dreams which you dismiss as nonsense; nothing more than a quirky artifact borne of the sleeping mind. When the dreams start to kill people, it's unsettling. When you get the dreams, too, it's weird. When they start to come true, you begin to doubt your sanity.

Great idea, but inexpertly told story.
Revisado: 12-03-18
The narrator takes some adjustment, because of his volume and thick accent, but after a first chapter you'll never notice it. The pace of the story is... frustrating. Things happen to advance the plot, but there are setbacks, delays, and "character development" scenes that offset what was almost a fast-paced book. There is a lot of personal strife and character friction which becomes frustrating if you just want the story to advance. Speaking of story, this is the redeeming feature of the book. The basic plot, ideas, and world-building (while not entirely original) are fascinating and exciting. The book, minus character development, is a compelling fantasy/supernatural/spy/sci-fi. however, if you begin reading, and think it boring, soppy, and annoying, you should send the book back and get the sequel. I have it on good authority that the sequels are much, much better, and I am in the process of reading on now. If you like fantasy, you'll probably make it through this book and like it. A Dark Inheritance has a couple of concepts kids under ten might not understand, but there isn't any swearing, hardly any blood, and no sexuality. That said, there are scenes that will probably scare the heck out of 'em for a night, but only if they really listen to it and think about it. Read it, or don't read it. I don't care.

The epic and highly anticipated conclusion to the listener-favorite series that had countless Audible listeners (and employees) hooked from the very first Bob - featuring, as always, a flawless performance from the inimitable Ray Porter. Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct.

Great book, Great reader, clean science fiction.
Revisado: 09-16-18
We are legion, we are Bob, is pure science fiction gold, just like Heinlein used to make (but without the endless social advancment monologues). In fact, this book constantly reminds me of "The moon is a harsh mistress", though they are wildly different books in many ways.
The reader could not have been better picked for the role. Heads up, uf you're used to English readers, this one is an American reader.
An indubitably fascinating story, it will keep you hooked from beginning to end. However, if you're not one for techy details, go read something else. The book doesn't get lost in these science-y tidbits, but if you just want pure, no-questions-asked, swashbuckling story, it's not for you. But others should not be deterred! despite long rests between fast-paced action scenes,it is a very exciting story. If you love science fiction, stop reading the stupid reviews and get the book!
