Historia
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

Amazing!
Revisado: 11-11-24
This is one of the best books that I have ever read. Captivating, enthralling, really beyond description. So many strands skillfully woven into a beautiful tapestry. I loved it!

A bit tedious
Revisado: 02-16-23
I gave up on this book a couple of times before actually coming back to finish it. It’s supposed to be a biography, but it is all over the place with tangents. You have to really be interested in minutiae to wade through the scientific weeds.

Years later, with her parents not speaking to her and her controversial relationship in tatters, all Preeti has left is her career at a prestigious Los Angeles law firm. But when Preeti receives word of a terrible accident in the city where she was born, she returns to India, where she’ll have to face her estranged parents...and the complicated past they left behind.

Could have been better
Revisado: 01-08-23
The actual plot was good but the main character’s internal thoughts took up about ten times as many words as the plot. It was frustrating to have the storyline constantly interrupted by long and very repetitive introspection. It felt like the agenda of the book was so pointed that it almost wasn’t a novel. I learned a lot about the differences in the Indian culture but it was so heavy handed as to become tedious. A good editor needs to take out a third to a half of the introspection and repetition and the plot would work fine without it. I thought of quitting the book many times before the end, but I stuck with it to see how it ended. Turns out that the ending wasn’t worth it. The main character comes off as selfish and clueless and not very sympathetic.

Flows so well that you can’t put it down. I would have wished for a more “fairy tale” ending, but that’s just my style.

With the exception of occasional foul words, I loved this book. But I’m not sure if I would have loved it as much without the voice actors. They made it come alive.

Historia
There’s no doubt that technology has made it easier to communicate. It’s also easier to shut someone out when we are confronted with online discourse. Why bother to understand strangers - or even acquaintances - when you can troll them, block them, or just click “Unfriend” and never look back? However briefly satisfying that might be, it’s also potentially eroding one of our most human traits: empathy.

I learned a number of interesting things about Virtual Reality and how it is being used for research, medical applications, and humanitarian causes. A more accurate title would have been “Can Virtual Reality Save Empathy?” Because I expected different content (more about other feelings and less about VR), I didn’t particularly enjoy the book. This also may have been caused by the audio presentation, which was devoid of emotion. Though each sentence was read perfectly, it seemed that each sentence was read in a vacuum. The tone and highs and lows did not make a group of sentences seem like a paragraph, but rather the entire book was composed of one line paragraphs. I forced myself to get through the entire book, but it wasn’t a captivating or engaging journey. (I do not mean to be cruel to the author, and I appreciate her hard work, but she needs to change the title and hire a professional reader.)
