Historia
A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over. For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters. Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end. He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it's impossible to escape the war's devastating effects on the world.

Tanner thought church camp would be boring. That this summer would be forgettable, uneventful, and lifeless. Then, he was surprised to make two friends, both of whom share his interests and anxieties. Together, maybe the three of them have a chance of surviving this long, hot summer. But all is not what it seems at Creston Camps.

To the public eye, Vincent Campbell is seen as a controversial figure known for his bizarre behavior, offensive outbursts, and contrarian stances—on top of a number of legal issues. Unbeknownst to most of the world, however, he holds secrets far worse than derogatory remarks in his personal life. And when it catches up to him, he tells all to a forensic psychiatrist, Lorraine Lynch, who has been assigned to find out why he has done what he has done.

Historia
No one saw it coming. It started with isolated reports of people kidnapping babies and blending them to drink their "essence"—a highly potent and highly addictive chemical compound found in infants. The phenomenon spread through social media, infecting other addicts. Cases of kidnapping and murder—femicide and infanticide—skyrocketed, leading to governments around the world to issue state of emergencies and strict shelter-at-home orders.

So I just wanna say I did not mean to buy this book and I am 100% returning it next chance I get.
I'll start with the biggest problem this performance has and that's the editing I lost count of how many times the audio peaks in this book ( that's when the audio sounds all fuzzy and loud) Granted it does happen less and less as the book goes on but the fact it happens once at all is a problem, there are also times when lines get repeated a few times like the editor forgot to cut out one of the takes which blows my mind that something like that can happen. So as you can see the two biggest problems are with the audio and since this is an audio book that basically means this book is unlistenable.
As for the story it's okay it's nowhere near as extreme or splatterpunk as the title would suggest yeah it has it's moments of violence and they are decent moments but it's few and far between and when it does happen it's okay at best. The characters are fine the main character is like every other main character to ever exist nothing really special about him and all the other characters are just there to move the story along or fill the body count quota. The plot is probably the best part and that's because a lot about it is left ambiguous.
I will say this in the books favor it's one of the very VERY few books that has a small child in it that is not super fucking annoying.
TL;DR the bad audio in this mid book means you should skip it

The only thing that stands between the town and total annihilation is a teen boy known as the tornado killer. Drawn to this enigmatic boy, our narrator senses an unnatural connection between them. But the adults are hiding a secret about the origins of the tornadoes and the true nature of the tornado killer.

a creative if slightly dull story.
Revisado: 10-19-23
I saw this book in the horror section of barns and nobles and picked it up on a whim. I love the plot of this book growing up with a fear of tornadoes I thought the idea of someone fighting them off to save a town was really cool.
I liked the characters well enough the MC was a little wordy and melodramatic but she is a teenager so that checks out the rest of the cast was either kinda bland or did not play a big enough part in the story to worry about, I will how ever say I've skipped talking about the other two main characters for spoiler reasons.
the narrator was great no notes.
I said I picked this up in the horror section because I wanted to point out how much of a horror this book was not I dont think it even tried to be a little scary HOWEVER the little violence that was mentioned was very VERY well-written and described ( the scary movie the main character dreams about watching at the sleep over sounds like it would be a great splatterpunk book)
so TL"DR
great plot with meh characters and no horror.

I dont normally write reviews for books. I didn't finish, but this one was rough. All the other complaints in all the other reviews are right. The characters do not act or speak like normal humans do, and they are all different levels of annoying with extra points going to Lucy

liked it more then I thought
Revisado: 06-28-23
I got this book because it had a cat, the opening was slow and I thought for sure I'd drop the book but I kept going and it kept getting better and better. I will say though it went from not enough characters to a lot more then the book probably needed, none of them got any real development BUT they were still good characters and if this is just a one and done book the lack of development is fine. this book was also a lot more funny then I would have thought.

is this recorded in a car?
Revisado: 05-26-23
THe book itself is fine more splatterpunk at its finest. I'm writing this review at the start of "this place is a zoo" normally I'd wait till the end of the book like a normal person but at the start of this chapter I've started to hear what sounds like a car's blinker under the dialog it's super off putting, I'll wait till the end of the chapter but if it keeps going after I'll have to drop the book.

A mix of Cozy Mystery and LitRPG

I really tried.
Revisado: 12-18-22
I work 10-hour days so I'm always on the lookout for longer audible books and when I saw this series get mentioned in one of the litrpg fan groups I'm in on Facebook I thought I'd give it a try I only made it halfway through book two.
Story: Normally I'm not a big fan of litrpg books that take place in a videogame like this, they never really build stakes it's just a game none of the characters are in any danger you know? But I did like the story angle of the MC hiding out in said video game while waiting for the heat to die down it's not going to change my mind but it was the first time I saw this approach. Like I said I only got halfway through book two I don't know the whole story but I know enough to know that whatever I'm missing won't change my mind.
Performance: all the narration is fine Soundbooth theater knows what they are doing though I will say they only have one sound effect for crowds and you will notice it, it does not happen enough to be really annoying but it happens too much.
I wanna take a moment to point out how awful of an MC these books have his character personality is all over the place in a bad way. So without spoiling anything, the MC needs a place to hide for two years he picks the VR game because the company running it has great security his plan is to "have lots of sex, do lots of drugs and drink lots of booze" but his personality is so meek he gets flustered and upset with himself whenever he notices a woman with a nice body, like my guy that's why you picked the game to hide out in, he also speaks like a redditor.
