Too much inner dialogue
Revisado: 03-16-25
The constant inner monologue about every single decision or observation is too much. The 5th floor was 70% of this book and most of that was the MC thinking. This book progresses the story very little, but he did do a ton of power leveling, but this has to be the slowest speed run in the history of LitRPG.

Soooooo slow
Revisado: 01-23-25
Loved this series, but I’m half way through this book and it’s insanely boring. Skip this one. Maybe the next one will go back to the story I’ve been listening to. This book does not serve to move the story along. Just one boring inane interaction after another.

Good series until the Author gives up
Revisado: 07-04-24
The self-proclaimed “father” of LitRPG is a giant baby who isn’t above taking a giant shit on his fans due to a few trolls giving him a hard time. The last book available on audible for this series at the time of this review is just the MC taking a shit. Literally, 90% of that book is just describing how the MC has explosive diarrhea. I mean, what’s the thought process. My fans really love this series and want another book, so I will just shit one out, litterally. I would recommend that you avoid anything this author writes, because as soon as you get into it, he will let his haters—not his fans—determine the tone of the next book. I feel the same way about the author of Supermage, who let his prequel fall flat due to some haters. He truncated a 7 or 8 book series down to 3 books because someone was mean to him.
You do you though. I’m done with both overgrown children pretending to be authors.
If you do decide to invest in this series, skip “Monsters”. I think it’s book 8. That’s the “shit” book. I wouldn’t start this series though until there’s at least a book 9. Or whatever number will come after “Monsters”.

The MC is an idiot. The author clearly doesn’t understand combat nor decided to research it prior to writing this book. The book is riddled with lengthy expositions regarding the MCs thoughts and feelings, but the reasoning is all very weak. I really didn’t care for the narrator either. Even if this was a good book, I’m not sure I would make it through his narration. If you want to listen to a good book that utilizes similar mechanics, but does a significantly better job, try the first defier.
For some truth in lending, I never made it past the first few hours of listening. Maybe it got better, but I’m calling it. That’s rare for me. I usually stick it out until the end, but I just can’t this time.

I love these books, but these seemed very short and mostly contained filler. I’m hoping the next installment actually covers the conflict now that we’ve set the stage for two books.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Pretentious Activist Posing as a Writer
Revisado: 09-22-22
When the demography, politics, and small minded idealism of your characters becomes more important than the story, the story sucks. Do yourself a favor and stop at book 3, or skip this series all together. Any character that balances out the MCs ideology and self righteousness is gone at the conclusion of Book 3.

Whiny MC
Revisado: 11-09-21
Not sure what else to tell you. I listen to a lot of LitRPGs and this is one of the worst. The story has a lot of promise, so much so, that I was hoping the MC would grow up. Unfortunately, that is not the case. He complains about everything, makes the dumbest decisions, never learns from mistakes, either let’s everyone take advantage of him or does the same himself. Criticizes everyone for the same crap he does and plays the victim on pretty much every page. This could have been a great story and I stayed with the series for 5 books. This will be the end for me.
The narration isn’t bad. Not great, but not bad.

Ehhh
Revisado: 02-28-21
The MC is hard to follow. He makes stupid mistakes. He’s hard headed for the sake of being hard headed, and his logic is consistently flawed. For an expert in history, he is horrible at any military tactics or mythology. Who studies old cultures and skips their mythology? How is that even possible? Also, he made the statement that he never cries, but he seems to cry every 5 minutes in the book and he cries for the most trivial reasons. Overall, the books aren’t horrible, but there are absolutely better LitRPG books out there. Honestly, this series has made me decide to take a break from this genre for a while. The MC consistently states that the players are no longer alive and “this is just a game”, while at the same time he “feels bad” about killing humanoid monsters. Additionally, he tries to befriend a fire salamander, like an idiot, then the salamander predictably sets him on fire. If that wasn’t bad enough, he makes this mistake over and over again. The inconsistency in the MC makes him unbelievable. The rest of the characters are believable and well done. If I could have spent the book in anyone else’s head, it would have been considerably better.
As always, Travis Baldree is awesome. He could make a menu sound interesting. Which means this series worked hard at being bad.

Great start to a series
Revisado: 02-17-21
This is a phenomenal book. The characters are well thought out. The narrator performs well and the story moves along at a steady pace. It’s fast enough so that you never get bored and slow enough that you never feel like you missed something. I haven’t enjoyed a book this much in a while. The world and character development are exemplary. I will definitely stick with this series.
