Our society tells us over and over that if we're going to achieve anything, we'd better do it while we're young. But whether you're at the start of your career, sensing you're on the wrong path, or feeling unsettled later in life, you're likely wondering just how to reinvent yourself? Have you left it too late? This book has answers. Late bloomers - individuals who experience significant success later in life - offer lessons for people who feel frustrated.

As a late bloomer this was exactly what I needed to read. It both validates my lived experience and challenges areas where I have unnecessarily foreclosed possibility for myself. Thank you!!

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

A revelation!
Revisado: 07-15-24
This was exactly the book my middle aged heart needed! I love how much it surprised and delighted me. July has an uncanny ability to put language to cringe-worthy private thought fragments you have but never fully articulate to yourself, let alone anyone else. I’m recommending it to literally every mid-life woman/human I encounter. Just heard from an old cis het male college friend I haven’t seen in 10 years who randomly recommended it to me, too!

Historia
On the morning of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie was standing onstage at the Chautauqua Institution, preparing to give a lecture on the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, when a man in black—black clothes, black mask—rushed down the aisle toward him, wielding a knife. His first thought: So it’s you. Here you are. What followed was a horrific act of violence that shook the literary world and beyond.

Rushdie is a treasure
Revisado: 05-07-24
I’ve loved his books all my life, but Knife offered a wonderfully intimate and unique glimpse into his mind in and around the terrifying attack. It’s above all else a love story, and he is unflinching unapologetic about that. This brazenness - given his age and the number of marriages in his wake - was so refreshing it cracked open my calcified heart ever so slightly. Is that uncomfortable feeling I’m having hope? Rushdie is a magician!

Historia
On September 27, 2018, Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee which was considering the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. She described an alleged sexual assault by the Supreme Court nominee that took place at a high school party in the 1980s. Her words and courage on that day provided some of the most credible and unforgettable testimony our country has ever witnessed. In One Way Back, Ford recounts the months she spent trying to get information into the right hands without exposing herself and her family to backlash.

Thank you, Dr Ford!
Revisado: 05-01-24
I felt enormous gratitude for Dr Ford as I listened to this and gained further context around this collectively tragic chapter in so many women’s & survivors lives. She’s an unlikely and ambivalent American and feminist hero, but a hero is unequivocally what she is! The personal cost to coming forward - to her, her family, her friends, her colleagues, and her students - has been profound and unjust. I hope she knows what an extraordinary gift she gave us - in coming forward and in writing this book. I love the humanizing personal details like: she’s a passionate surfer, a lover of misfits, a bit of a misfit herself, that she dyes her hair blue, and that her favorite bands are Metallica and Pearl Jam! She’s wonderfully human and reluctantly brave.

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Historia
In February 2014, Reni Eddo-Lodge posted an impassioned argument on her blog about her deep-seated frustration with the way discussions of race and racism in Britain were constantly being shut down by those who weren't affected by it. She gave the post the title 'Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race'. Her sharp, fiercely intelligent words hit a nerve, and the post went viral, spawning a huge number of comments from people desperate to speak up about their own similar experiences.

Revisado: 01-24-19
Eddo-Lodge does a powerful job of breaking down often hard to understand concepts like structural racism, white privilege, and intersectional feminism. I definitely learned a lot and feel better armed to continue to talk to white about race - as well as how to listen better to experiences different from my own.

Given the current state of affairs, I wept through most of this extraordinary listen. It’s incredible when people with power disclose their own vulnerabilities and champion and amplify the voices of the struggling and disenfranchised. Grateful for Michelle, modeling curiosity, grace, imperfection, and ongoing growth for us all.

Amanda Palmer is a wonderful role model. I love everything about this book, who she is, what she represents, etc. I'd been a casual fan of the Dresden Dolls but didn't know much about her. Be prepared to Fall In Love!
