Yikes. Parents heads up!
Revisado: 11-17-22
I generally read the negative reviews first and often look for an indication of who doesn't like a book. I did this here and I found a lot of the reviews seemed salty about advice to stay trim and healthy and the promotion of natural looking make up. I took that as a good enough reason to pay $4 for the audiobook.
I have two daughters. One could use some encouragement to put in a bit more effort. The other a little too eager to be glamorous. I was looking for some simple straightforward personal hygiene and style tips with an emphasis on not overdoing it. The title is of course obnoxious, but I figured it was targeted towards young teens and shrugged it off. I just wanted to make sure my older daughter wasn't going off into the world with no practice in how to looked polished and help my younger daughter avoid that overdone and precocious look I see so often.
Yikes! Craving attention from MEN? As a young teen? Sugar daddies in college? I was honestly was shocked. I have read articles about gen Zers like this, but was floored to find this in a book that is marketed toward teens. I'm so glad I previewed it!
That said, most of the advice here reads as though the author just did a Google search and regurgitated it with a peppy can do attitude, some really over the top stuff, and some frankly dangerous DIY beauty treatments.
Parents, do not get this book for your teens.

The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true.... While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war.

Nostalgia and Nothing More to Offer
Revisado: 10-09-20
I wanted to like this book. I loved Firefly way back when and rewatch every year or so despite the toxic way women are used seeming more and more starkly gross as time goes by. Geishas, belly dancers, saloon girls, a prostitute and a naked abused teenage girl all in the first episode? Yeehaw. Sex work is so liberating and isn't predicated on the abuse of women? Sure Joss. Sigh.
Anyhow, I wanted to like this. The storyline was a bit bizarre when coming from familiarity with just the original series and the subsequent movie. I won't give spoilers. This takes place between the two and yet somehow the alliance is way, way less oppressive or at least capable of oppression. I was willing to put that aside for the sake of a fun nostalgic listen.
But the writing, yikes! I don't know if I can accurately express how distracting it is to hear things like, "he graveled," and the like after each bit of dialog. It is as if instead of writing dialog that would convey tone, as the show did so brilliantly, the writer here decided to beat you over the head with the chain of command Jayne mentioned on Train Job. Towards the end, there is almost two hours left and I can't bring myself to finish, you will find yourself wishing Reavers would have got 'em all in the first chapter.
I think I'll try out Killer Angels and hope that the material inspiring the series is a might better than this insert poorly pronounced Chinese foul language here.

The concept of resistance great, the author’s historical and theological musings? Not so much.
Revisado: 07-30-18
I was very impressed with the author’s thoughts on how artists self-sabotage or at times be attacked by this force he calls Resistance. There is a lot of meat there for any aspiring or struggling artist.
The author’s really pitiful characterization of the development of culture from ancient times through the Middle Ages and into modern civilization was very disappointing and cliched.
His bizarre theological musings were enough to make me consider not finishing the book. Does anyone really think suburban kids taking ecstasy are engaging in important creative and spiritual explorations?
This may just be my own generational pet peeve about baby boomers, but these were difficult things to get past. Instead of a really well formed and tight exploration about the challenges of creating art this book fell off the rails at times.
I would recommend it, but with some reservations.

Historia
In 1518, in a small town in Alsace, Frau Troffea began dancing and didn't stop. She danced until she was carried away six days later, and soon 34 more villagers joined her. Then more. In a month more than 400 people had been stricken by the mysterious dancing plague. In late-19th-century England an eccentric gentleman founded the No Nose Club in his gracious townhome - a social club for those who had lost their noses, and other body parts, to the plague of syphilis for which there was then no cure.

Trite and Tedious
Revisado: 09-18-17
This would have been so much better without the author inserting her personality over the material. Some of the inane attempts at being hip may relate towards selling a book on this topic. That said, I couldn't sick it out. What a fascinating topic! What a disappointing execution.

Fantastic!
Revisado: 09-12-16
Our family absolutely loved listening to both the Old and New Testaments. Ages six to nine got a lot out of it and even the two year old loved it. The production value is fantastic and it is solidly Catholic (you can take the book from the Church but you can't take the Church from the book).
I highly recommend both volumes!
