Tiny heart . . . will grow?

Jay Snyder's reading keeps this book going. It's non-stop action that has a charming heart in Li, a precocious 3-year-old Chinese in deep trouble. Can't assess accurately the physical skill set of our hero, but the book never hits a low tempo, except for briefest physical recovery times required to re-wind our guy's capabilities. He's a sort of Jack Reacher figure, larger than life (though not of Reacher's physical stature), and with his own moral code. Li deems him a hero, and that he is. Perhaps the character will grow in terms of complexity. If you are here for the action and a quick summer thrill, go for it.

Even if your only association with 'stem' is with a flower or a glass, Hail Mary is a fantastic read, a brilliant foray into extraterrestrial adventure. It literally stutters into life, then soon hits warp speed. At first you think you will be alone in the head of one character, then 'all heaven breaks loose,' as it were. I am the antithesis of a science person, but Andy Weir marries science with heart. Unforgettable characters, and well, the science sinks in as well. Run, don't walk, as the sound direction is also brilliant. Ray Porter, of course, pretty much the perfect narrator.

Potential for Redemption?

Gildart Jackson's narration led me to this title. At first, those familiar with Peter Grainger's series about D.C. Smith find themselves in familiar territory. Alas, Gallagher spends more time with his villains than with his main police protagonist, George Elms. The plotline has some potential, the 'good guy' characters much more; the villains are largely boring, rendered memorable only by Jackson's superbly orchestrated voice. For me, the book became more interesting somewhere around Chapter 30. This is the first Charlie Gallagher I have 'read.' Perhaps he never dives more deeply into character, preferring to develop plots with some surprising turns. The second book in the series may offer more, and as Bodily Harm ends in something of a cliffhanger, may be worth your investment.

This is a departure from other Simon Serailler novels in that we spend, not considerable, but let's say, some uncomfortable time in the killer's head. Hill never does gore or salaciousness, so the reader is not subjected to awful details. And in the end, it is well worth spending that time for the internal questions the killer asks. It is an intense self-examination reflected in different ways in the minds and hearts of what have by now become familiar and beloved characters. Another gorgeously delivered read by Pacey as well.

For all categories, this is a 3 1/2 for me (no clue how to make the 'half' happen), better than 'pretty good,' but not 'great.'
This is a story of war's exigencies, of sacrifices moral and immoral, chosen and inflicted upon people caught up in global events over which they have scant control. The male romantic lead is a pawn of the British government, and while the female romantic lead eventually gives some reasons for her behaviour, these are not explored to any real degree. John Lee's narration adds sparkle to the interesting characters--English, French, German--who manipulate the hero/heroine. In the end, I was not entirely convinced of the decisions made by either of the chief characters. There are more than enough regrets to go around.

If you read Harper's first werewolf book and want to try a second, consider waiting a bit before diving into this one, as the 'voice'--figuratively and literally--of hero Maggie sounds exactly like that of Mo, our hero of How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf. In that book, Maggie was werewolf Cooper's bitter younger sister, and while most of her issues were resolved there, here she is such a kinder, gentler version of Maggie as to be unrecognizable. For me, the plot turns were not very well done or rewarding, and the character development was minimal. Though "all comparisons are odious" (Cervantes, Don Quixote), if you like supernatural romance, Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse books are still, for me, far more rewarding.

Really a 2 1/2!

As the book cover (which I failed to notice!) suggests, this novel is more romance than 'supe.' The Alaskan setting w/a southern gal hero is different. Overall, it was fun, mostly b/c of Molly Harper's gift for repartee and self-deprecating humor. The main characters are down to earth and kind, with feisty edges. Reader Amanda Ronconi is fine as our gal Mo. But she has only one male voice, and it's just a raspy gal voice.

There were several redeeming scenes (no spoilers), and if you are a mainstream romance lover, you will probably enjoy the book. Though Harper is no Charlaine Harris, this is my first experience with her writing, and I'll probably give her another read.

Any additional comments?

Our reader pro-noun-ces ev-er-y syl-la-ble. De-lib-er-ate-ly. Abbott's story starts explosively with a beautifully described parkour run that seems to promise that our hero will use this skill to save himself or thwart the enemy. I was with Sam Capra thru the bomb and his subsequent imprisonment (not really spoilers). Then the story developed holes large enough to drive a Hummer through. The combination of increasingly implausible plot developments and Collins's devastating reading style made me jettison before I reached the end of the first download.

This is a gorgeous and generous book, highway robbery at the sale price of 5.95. It is a lush and complicated tale, with the various threads of this several-generational story drawn together into a near-perfect tapestry.
