As a Brenda Jackson aficionado, I believe that this book and especially it's precurser, Catalina Cove, are perhaps the best series editions ever. Brilliant storyline, intriguing, suspenseful, sexy, soulful and utterly and completely satisfying!!

I have been a serious fan of Brenda Jackson ever since reading her first book. I have always been drawn to her Adept skill at bringing passion and intellect and humor and real life stories to the page. this book is by far one of her very best and she has simply outdone herself. combine a fascinating story, interesting and believable characters, real issues of human conflict and conscience, hot and steaming love, and you have the makings of magnificent read!

As only Brenda can, her characters exist, grow, and develop as the story unfolds. Her visual writing creates a character who is multi dimensional, and is believable. This story of an interracial relationship is current and timeless. Despite their challenges and uncertainty, as will happen in spite of the fears and trepidations...love finds a way.

not a deeply complex story, but topical and interesting; lesson to remember about trust and faith always worth hearing.
Narrator was terrible, truly detracted from book, yet proof of strong story that made me endure his delivery

wanted to keep listening, even when other things beckoned. found myself making deals with myself to do something that needed to be done, with the promise of a reward; the joy of listening to more of Red Hot!

If you could sum up Born a Crime in three words, what would they be?

Heartbreaking, Insightful, Triumphant

What did you like best about this story?

The truth of apartheid and the resonance with the struggle of black people around the world; heartbreaking, candid, courageous and ever hopeful in the face of hopelessness. Love sustains, even when blood is shed and hate persists. And still, we rise!

What does Trevor Noah bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hearing the truth of the matter through the emotion of a lived experience paints the words with the pain, regret, commitment to succeed that an impersonal reading could not, no matter the eloquence of the speaker.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I was laughing, crying simultaneously as I understood, viscerally, the journey, and watch these same stories/themes play out in English, rather than Afrikaans, on this North American continent, daily.

Any additional comments?

This ought to be required reading of everyone in schools, in government positions, in churches, in businesses, especially where "good people" gather and assert their commitment to freedom and justice for all! It's a hard read and a challenge to stick and stay in each moment, don't turn away or try to rationalize this as though South Africa and apartheid has nothing to do with the current struggles for black people, for all people who are marginalized. Consider the loss of talent, capacity, skill and ability and how that impacts all of us as we are inextricably woven in each other's best tomorrow.

This is a beautiful story that succeeds despite the narration . Initially, I thought she would get better, but the monotone delivery went on, with little change . This is powerful and empowering story and deserved a reading that could express the range of emotions so wonderfully written. A distraction, to be sure, but such a well written story so well crafted that it transcends the narration issues and is triumphant!!

I enjoyed the story line, but the telling of it seemed a bit arduous and labored at points. the narrator's voices are not individually distinguished well enough to ascertain immediately which character was speaking. The range of her voice is also Limited which resulted in the characters sounding so similarly.

I love Brenda Jackson and very much enjoyed this particular series of hers with the God Brothers but the narration is terrible. These voices sound like people from Texas or West Virginia, somewhere with a very Southern Country dialect and it's absolutely disconcerting with her African American characters. I can appreciate it if this was taking place in the Deep South , but I didn't get that sense that this is where the book was set. I truly regret having bought this now as opposed to ordering the book so I can hear their voices that are so very familiar to me and my family.
