Historia
King Philip VI was the first French King of the famous House Valois, and he inherited France at the height of its power. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t remain that way for long. His fierce rivalry with King Edward of England destabilized the region, threw France into turmoil, and launched one of Europe's most infamous wars: The Hundred Years’ War. Originally born into minor nobility, Philip was never considered to one day be king. The life journey of Philip VI, the first king of House Valois, is a truly fascinating story filled with unsuspecting inheritance.

Narration is comedic, making the history seem like a Monty Python skit
Revisado: 10-16-22
Please narrators, either learn to pronounce French, or just say place names as Americans would. This hybrid approach mangles the words beyond recognition and makes the exercise comical.
Appreciate the idea of the recounting as Cliff’s Notes on Philip VI’s reign and the Hundred Years’ War.

Historia
"Two Years in the Forbidden City" is a book written by Princess Der Ling, who was the renowned Lady-in-waiting to the Empress Dowager Cixi in the early 20th century. Though Empress Dowager Cixi is a household name, Der Ling's point of view offers a quite unique and surprisingly intimate portrayal of the Empress and Beijing's Imperial Palace in China's last feudal dynasty.

Historia
At last, the full story behind Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman's epic romance, including stories, portraits, and the occasional puzzle. How did they do it? They came from completely different families, endured a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits.

Hilarious and real
Revisado: 08-16-22
If you’ve merely read the book, you’ve missed the delight of hearing it narrated - with extras - by the two charming thespians who wrote it, Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman. Delightful and occasionally naughty, they ply their lifestyle from pet dogs to doin’ the dirty. Their narrated “advice columns” on love, work, Hollywood, religion, pets, family, and puzzles are completely heartwarming and made me believe again in America.

Sensationalized stories of the British royal family presented by the reigning queen of trash
Revisado: 07-12-22
Was that too strong? There were some interesting histories, but the author’s snide remarks are presented as fact when they are merely her opinions. As a whole this recounting is grist for those who love tabloids, so thank goodness for Audible and fast-speed listening. Unfortunately, the author herself reads the Audible version and at any speed she is so unremittingly snarky and opinionated that this ranks as one of the top wastes of time I’ve ever experienced.

Historia
Violette Toussaint is the caretaker at a cemetery in a small town in Bourgogne. Casual mourners, regular visitors, and sundry colleagues - gravediggers, groundskeepers, and a priest - visit her to warm themselves in her lodge, where laughter, companionship, and occasional tears mix with the coffee she offers them. Her life is lived to the rhythms of their funny, moving confidences. But her routine is disrupted by the arrival of the local police chief, who insists on scattering the ashes of his recently deceased mother on the gravesite of a complete stranger.

Worth reading; not listening to
Revisado: 05-12-22
Recommend reading in French or other translation. But by all means avoid the English language Audible version as the narrator is awful. She sounds far too young to be the voice of the protagonist, expresses all emotions as disdain, and unforgivably, she can’t pronounce even the simplest French words (Peugeot?! Camus?!!) which are essential to the feeling of this novel. Her other impersonations, of gravediggers or priests, are east coast approximations of what might work as a Jewish deli denizen or an older Bronx man. Fairly unbearable in a story set in France. At one point a local French man suddenly sounds like Deputy Dog. Does no one audition narrators?!
Here are interwoven stories likely worth reading, but I am still recovering from gnashed teeth at this pitiful Audible effort.

When Sadie sees her brother Irving nervously shifting about on her front lawn, she knows that something's wrong. Goldie, their eldest sister, has vanished without a trace, leaving everyone stunned. What begins as a family mystery becomes something deeper still: a dazzling portrait of the Cohen family and a moving story of American small-city life, spanning the years from 1929 to the late 1940s.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 04-14-22
Beautifully read. Wonderful writing until it becomes tedious to hear the inner confusion of every single character. Nothing is resolved in this novel and there is the sensation of time standing still even as the years pass. The family is dysfunctional and yet no individual member seems even vaguely aware of how to escape the nebulous legacy of neglect.
