Good set-up and suspense, too much explication

I dig weird fantasy and horror and don't expect much more than brain candy. I will forgive a lot when I read King, but it was hard to keep listening through all of the "explication as character dialogue" (and through the narrator's clunky depiction of Holly, Yune, and Lovey). I felt bludgeoned by King's continual repetition of "convergence" and other "themes." King can obviously do character well, as other books have proven, but this novel spends way too many words explaining the weird stuff. I say just let the weird stuff be weird stuff and give us some character dialogue that reveals character rather than using the characters as devices to walk the reader through an explanation of DNA and how the monster of the week might use it against us.

This book will stand beside Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind as a living book that I can always return to for learning. I was ready for hearing and absorbing this teaching just as I happened across it. I hope you find the same -- that your readiness for training in compassion comes when you are broken, bored, angry, frustrated, content, confused, depressed, overwhelmed, terrified, joyous, alienated, sick, lonely, satisfied, excited -- and that no matter where you are and how you feel, now is not the right time, but the only time for training in compassion.

Mitchell's first novel - intertwined, intertextual

This is a novel that demands close listening/reading and re-reading. With Ghostwritten, Mitchell creates a world of intertwined stories and narrators -- a mashup of styles, and an intricate mosaic whose network of gaps are as critical as the fragments that make up
its whole. Human characters narrate their sections alongside beings without bodies and a deity whose body is a network of signals, voices, and satellites. As witty and moving as the most literate fiction and as imaginative and mythic as the best science fiction, Ghostwritten will leave you awe-struck and electrified to go back to the first page and take the ride again. The audiobook narrator had the daunting task of evoking these diverse voices and did so excellently!

Would you listen to The Metamorphosis and Other Stories again? Why?

Of course! I return to this book again and again when other fiction is not satisfying. Kafka has such a unique voice and such a masterful ability to entrance the reader. Joachim Neugroschel's translation captures Kafka's dark humor (and ability to maintain the fictional dream) much better than the Muir's translations did.

Any additional comments?

"A Country Doctor" and "In the Penal Colony" are the best
