It is a complicated story about two towns and their families who become opposing groups and express their feelings while aggressively playing hockey games. Characters are elegantly developed, and the storylines are complex and well-designed. A great deal of thought was given to describing the characters and the actions of those who live in these two small towns.

I bought this book based on the strength of it's reviews and the fact it was an Oprah book club recommendation, but I found I could not wade through the pain and suffering... not in our current and past political environment. It was too difficult and too graphic - that was really the point. This book draws you in and the details are so careful painted and the performance so eloquent, I felt I was there... and I didn't want to be. Perhaps that's what makes a good book if you are ready.

For those who enjoy mingling science with mystery and romance, this book was interesting story. However, after the first few chapters, the storyline became more like a romance novel. I found it increasingly difficult to accept why the lead characters would behave in the fashion they did. For the me, the real redeeming part of the story was the integration of the biology of the swamp plants and animals.

Listening to Michelle Obama describe her growing up family and support, one realizes how much it influenced who she became as First Lady and beyond. The book was a tasteful story of her early life and a window into what is clearly a very complex, brilliant man: Barrack Obama. One has to appreciate living with him through his singled minded drive to change how the world operated come hell or high water while she set aside her many talents to care for their children was a huge deal. Michelle Obama is a gifted, perceptive woman and this book demonstrated how she worked to achieve balance in their lives at least up to the White House years. After that I felt the book was somewhat disjointed as if it were cloaked in secrecy, having been written more collaboratively, lacking somewhat the single voice of the earlier chapters. Still, a book not to be missed, if for just to understand the drive, quirks and brilliance of the President.

As someone who was personally very close to agoraphobia, this book and the reader brought the experience back in spades. The main character both got it wrong from the beginning, but got it right in the end and her sanity was the gift, but all the ups and downs in between made it very hard for me to put the book down. I also listened to the reader interview the author at the conclusion of the book and found that part enlightening - he has suffered for more than 15 years from depression and has a life long interest in Hitchcock-like movies. The interview was both revealing and fascinating.

Read by an Aussie and set in the outback, this murder mystery is a real page turner. Just when I thought I had the bad "guy" figured out, I was wrong. Set in a small outback town in Australia, this book shows just how poorly its population could treat one of its own, Aaron, who left and came back for a short "visit" to help solve the horrific murder of one of his childhood friends named Luke. In the process Aaron becomes an object of harassment, ridicule and must also relive a very painful episode of his own growing up developed in artfully done flashbacks. I could not put this book down!

Written from the first person, I cringed when I "heard" Eleanor's thoughts.. Beautifully read, her discomfort and pain captured, I imagined that there are parts of Eleanor's story in all of us - whether it is her childhood, work or relationship experiences. Definitely worth the time.

Long, complex and clever - some audible books are difficult to follow because there are too many characters or not enough vocal shifts to figure out who is on stage. None of that is a problem with this story. It's as if it were written to be an audible book. Researched and written so carefully that I often could imagine myself as Robin, the main female character. I have to say that feeling like Robin was at times down right terrifying. The story also brings to light a form of body integrity identity disorder, which is a key part of the mystery. I really like mysteries and it really was not until the very end that I understood who the real culprit was and how he managed to escape notice. Now I'm going to be and read the other two mysteries.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A reality check for the main character.

Has Private turned you off from other books in this genre?

Maybe if I was in need of the movie star, fantasyland, thrill seeking escapist reading "fix".

Which character – as performed by Peter Hermann – was your favorite?

?

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Revulsion at the blatant use of blood, guts and appeal to common movie story

Any additional comments?

Review speaks for itself... except I think the performance was the real saving grace. He brought the character to life and I liked how that was done. If I were reading this book, it would have ended up on the used book sale.
