Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I’ve always enjoyed the Kingsolver books and this one is exceptional. The narrator brings it to life in so many ways.

I was totally clueless!
Revisado: 12-12-22
I wasn’t sure about this book but decided to give it a try. Was immediately hooked. I feel so ashamed that I have never even thought about a group of our population made up of those who are deaf and blind. This book really brings home the challenges they face daily and those challenges made harder with the additional challenges Arlie faced. This is an excellent book and I am so proud of all those who live rich lives in spite of over why obstacles.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

It is wonderful to listen to a book that I thought was going to be a bit absurd and find that it will go on my list of favorites. The narrators are wonderful, especially Marcellous and at times I laughed out loud and others I had to hold back tears. Just simply wonderful.

I love him even more!
Revisado: 09-13-21
This was one of the most enjoyable, poignant books I have listened to. This incredibly funny and sweet, sweet man tells his story in a way that will make you laugh and make you want to cry. It is also so uplifting to hear someone stay true to himself having gone through some of the things in his early life. The love of both of his parents shines through and he honors them. If you are a Leslie Jordan fan, you must listen to this wonderful book.

POWERFUL, MOVING BOOK
Revisado: 03-07-21
I just said goodbye to the characters in this book and I feel like I have said goodbye to someone I love. I’ve read about the dust bowl many times but this was entirely different. It’s a hard book because the author does not rewrite history. It is a book I won’t forget.

Cant's Wait for Book # 3
Revisado: 02-24-21
I loved her first book in this series and was so happy when # 2 was available, and I definitely wasn't disappointed. I had to go back to Tidelands and catch up on the ending (after all, it had been a while), but as soon as I did that, I was hooked on this one. Definitely listen to the first book and then this one. Now, the wait for book # 3.

I thought the book was great and it held my attention. I was a bit put off by the conclusion. Felt it was a bit trite and unbelievable. But overall, it was good.

Historia
Thomas McNulty, having fled the Great Famine in Ireland and now barely 17 years old, signs up for the US Army in the 1850s and with his brother in arms, John Cole, goes to fight in the Indian Wars - against the Sioux and the Yurok - and, ultimately, in the Civil War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, they find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in. Moving from the plains of Wyoming to Tennessee, Sebastian Barry's latest work is a masterpiece of atmosphere and language.

Finally gave up!
Revisado: 09-11-19
I truly tried to listen and enjoy this book, and was almost half way through and just had to give up. It really doesn't have a point. There is absolutely nothing in the story that makes you anxious to come back and see what happens next. So glad it was a special for only a bit. Otherwise, I would be sending back for a refund.

Historia
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

Definitely does not disappoint
Revisado: 03-26-19
I am always so excited when I see a new novel by Lisa See and this was no exception. I love the way she brings out the cultures, both the beautiful and the not so beautiful parts. And the relationships between the characters are heartbreaking. A novel not to be missed.
