A difficult but rewarding read
Revisado: 01-27-25
This is the sort of book one reads more than once. It demands the reader engage with it. I spent more time thinking about the book than reading it even as I was getting through it. It had me obsessed.
Obviously great writing, and well performed.

Imaginative, at times to a fault
Revisado: 01-27-25
This is a wild ride that blends adventure and horror in a surreal and weird narrative. If there is a flaw, it is that the plot beats can seem picked at random at times. There is a coherence to them that the reader eventually discovers, but I was not satisfied with this explaination. I was highly entertained and loved the start, middle bits, and ending each on their own - I just didn’t love how they came together.

From his 1935 debut with "The Universal History of Iniquity", through his immensely influential collections Ficciones and The Aleph, these enigmatic, elaborate, imaginative inventions display Borges' talent for turning fiction on its head by playing with form and genre and toying with language.

Flawless writing
Revisado: 01-27-25
Nobody writes a short story like Borges, and these are among his best. The performance is good as well. The only flaw is the tinny music that plays between stories.

A fun campy story
Revisado: 01-27-25
Typical monster story with supernatural elements. A groups of teens overcome the evil being the adults could not defeat. Entertaining and easy to read. I enjoyed the narration.

Historia
Surreal and splendidly unconventional, The Hearing Trumpet is an apocalyptic fairy-tale quest about an occult old ladies' home and the spry nonagenarian who ends up there. After coming into possession of a hearing trumpet, 92-year-old Marian Leatherby discovers her son's plans to send her to a nursing home. But this is no ordinary place.... Here there are strange rituals, orgiastic nuns, levitating abbesses, animalistic humans, humanistic animals, a search for the Holy Grail, and a plan to escape to Lapland and knit a tent....

Beautiful and surreal
Revisado: 01-27-25
This book keeps you guessing, and then slowly, as if you are joining a cult, brings you to accept increasingly bizzare concepts until you are neck deep in a strange reality without knowing how you arrived there.
