Historia
A new virus descended on the human species in 2019 wreaking unprecedented havoc. Nearly two years into the pandemic, the crucial mystery of the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is not only unresolved but has deepened. In this uniquely insightful book, a scientist and a writer join forces to try to get to the bottom of how a virus whose closest relations live in bats in subtropical southern China somehow managed to begin spreading among people more than 1,500 kilometers away in the city of Wuhan.

Eye opening and yet not at all surprising. This shows how political divides can steer media reporting and public opinion and shows how this effect can have grave global consequences. Mainstream media -pay attention! Not everyone in your audience believes everything we are told.

Historia
When Indonesia's Mount Tambora erupted in 1815, it unleashed the most destructive wave of extreme weather the world has witnessed in thousands of years. The volcano's massive sulfate dust cloud enveloped the Earth, cooling temperatures and disrupting major weather systems for more than three years. Amid devastating storms, drought, and floods, communities worldwide endured famine, disease, and civil unrest on a catastrophic scale.

Interest information, narrator please speak up
Revisado: 01-02-25
The information presented was interesting and I enjoyed it, but I perceived the narrator’s voice as whispering to a degree, as if he was trying to be quiet, and it was distracting.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Good story, keeps you guessing!
Revisado: 12-27-24
Good ideas in this story, lots of moral dilemmas. Sometimes it’s hard to follow the characters (needs to come with a family tree PDF) . I really enjoyed the twists but the narrators’s New Orleans accent comes through to me as New York and it’s very distracting. I liked this story a lot!

Historia
On April 6, 1965, Georges Lemay was relaxing on his yacht in a south Florida marina following one of the largest and most daring bank heists in Canadian history. For four years, the roguishly handsome criminal mastermind hid in plain sight, eluding capture and the combined efforts of the FBI, Interpol, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His future appeared secure. What Lemay didn't know was that less than two hundred miles away at Cape Canaveral, a brilliant engineer named Harold Rosen was about to usher in the age of global live television.

This criminal was not the impetus for launching the age of communication… The was an interesting piece of history nonetheless.

This is a great display of how a society might choose to behave at end of days. Simon Prebble is one of my favorite narrators and always brings characters to life in a way that draws you into the story. This was a very good listen!

Historia
Set in a beautiful but economically devastated Pennsylvania steel town, American Rust is a novel of the lost American dream and the desperation-as well as the acts of friendship, loyalty, and love-that arise from its loss. From local bars to train yards to prison, it is the story of two young men, bound to the town by family, responsibility, inertia, and the beauty around them, who dream of a future beyond the factories and abandoned homes.

Starts out good but wears you out and seemed to go nowhere
Revisado: 06-05-24
I liked the beginning but the story wore me out after a while. The inner monologues of the characters were tiring and rambling and the partial sentences drove me crazy. I don’t believe you go to real hard core prison before you are even formally charged and brought before a judge or even go to trial. The ending was pretty vague and I would not recommend this book or this author.

Historia
For the first time ever, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced an audio recording of all of Lovecraft's stories. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the original stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection. This collection spans his entire career from his earliest surviving works of childhood to stories completed shortly before his death. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies.

Make sure the kids aren’t around! Just because you’re a grown-up doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the art of the children’s bedtime story. Nick Offerman presents this collection of 12 short stories written in the style of a classic kids' tale, but with a decidedly dark and adult approach. What really happened after Snow White died, from the perspective of the one medically trained dwarf? A naive wizard professor reports back from the trenches of an underprivileged school of magic. And much more!

I could not like any of the characters… bestseller?? NO WAY!
Revisado: 03-04-24
Who is the good guy here? The PD who gets his client off the hook by accusing the widowed husband, then feeling righteously indignant when that widowed husband is accused of the murder, just like he convinced the jury?? Bogus. And the whiny kid and the ex… don’t get me started. And dogs can go to work with you? Right. How did this make the best seller list anywhere?? Shallow and not realistic. Not thrilling at all. There was no actual crisis of conscience and the PD did what he did in the end only to save himself the hassle of future confrontation, not because it was the right thing to do.. ugh.. the end of chapter 26 is laughable.

Characters were not likable
Revisado: 01-06-24
Having to listen to the condescending attitude of a self-centered, narrow-minded rude teenager was really painful. This novel should be advertised as YA and I would have avoided it. Neat twist but until you figured it out there were just weird holes in the story that made it frustrating to continue. Also the action felt ridiculous and the story itself lacked depth. Sorry but I will not read this author again. Kudos for trying to gain support for the plight of the elephants.
