Historia
The attack on Nazi Germany’s dams on May 17, 1943, was one of the most remarkable feats in military history. The absurdly young men of the Royal Air Force’s 617 Squadron set forth in cold blood and darkness, without benefit of electronic aids, to fly lumbering heavy bombers straight and level towards a target at a height above the water less than the length of a bowling alley. Yet this story has never been told in full. Max Hastings takes us back to the May 1943 raid to reveal how the truth of that night is considerably different from the popularized account most people know.

Nuanced view of one of WW2's most daring air raids.
Revisado: 06-10-24
A powerful story, presented with an understated delivery. Tries to present the views of all those concerned both before and after the raid. Nevertheless, the author presents an unequivocally critical view of "Bomber" Harris from every conceivable angle.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Very good performance by reader.
Revisado: 04-18-24
Some of the dialog seemed unnecessarily long and made the story drag. Nevertheless, it was a good portrayal of the complexities confronting a foreigner in 1600's Japan.

Didn't really care for the story. Didn't like the performance where both male and female characters are narrated by the same person.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Stirring account.
Revisado: 10-09-23
After a slightly slow start, introducing the main characters, the story picked up speed after the Wager's final voyage began. At times, the plight of the crew was so desperate that it was hard to listen for an extended period. Nevertheless, I could not put it down for long. I thought the narration was especially good, bringing to life the written and spoken word of the time.

Historia
Inverting the Pyramid is a pioneering soccer book that chronicles the evolution of soccer tactics and the lives of the itinerant coaching geniuses who have spread their distinctive styles across the globe. Through Jonathan Wilson's brilliant historical detective work, we learn how the South Americans shrugged off the British colonial order to add their own finesse to the game; how the Europeans harnessed individual technique and built it into a team structure; how the game once featured five forwards up front, while now a lone striker is not uncommon.

A lot of detail and history for the enthusiast
Revisado: 11-01-22
This book won't be for every football enthusiast. The topic is the evolution of football formations and tactics over 150 years. It includes incredible detail of teams, coaches and matches. The football enthusiast over the past 50 years will probanly only be vaguely aware of the historical context and "big picture" developments in tactics and formations discussed here.

For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Kafka on the Shore comes this rich and revelatory memoir about writing and running and the integral impact both have made on his life. Equal parts training log, travelogue, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers Murakami's four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon. Settings range from Tokyo, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston, among young women who outpace him.

Revisado: 07-25-21
I really enjoyed Michelle Obama’s reading of her book “Becoming“. It was interesting to hear about her early life, her education and career, how she met and married Barack, became a mother, and adjusted to life as First Lady. Her experiences can teach everyone about how to live our fullest life. I highly recommend this book.

Part narrative, part practical, this adventure takes you to the foothills of Ethiopia and the ‘town of runners’; to the training grounds of world-record-holding marathon runners in Kenya; racing across the Arctic Circle and the mountains of Europe, through the sweltering sands of the Sahara and the hostility of a winter traverse of the Pennine Way, to witness the incredible natural movement of runners in these environments.
