I went in knowing absolutely nothing and I'm really glad I did. The story unravels as a sort of dual mystery with the clues both around him and in his own head, with the main character needing to figure out both what happened in the past to get him here, and what he's going to do in the present. Even when past points start to become clear, the question of how exactly they played out stays intriguing. The personal relationships between the characters feel real and refreshingly unreserved (sometimes even people you like are just being a pain!), but ultimately it's about the question of what someone does when everything seems hopeless: Do you give up, or drive on and science the shit out of it?

If you enjoyed the movies but wished there was more time for detail on how the world works and what the characters are thinking, you've gotta pick up this book. We get to dive into the worldbuilding of the Moors & its neighboring human kingdom as Aurora works to try and build peace between them, but most fascinating to me is the time we spend really getting to know all the main characters.
Aurora and Phillip finally the chance to get fleshed out, especially Aurora. She's kindhearted and inexperienced, but no pushover, even as she tries to adjust to all her new responsibilities while still trying to deal with the aftermath of being cursed. And we get to explore what it looks like when her and Phillip get the chance to know each other as friends beyond infatuation at first sight.
We also get a look inside Maleficent and even Diaval's heads as they also get their own POV chapters. And if you happen to like the thought of them in a relationship together, there are some great "subtle" moments on that front.
For the audiobook itself, the narrator has a lovely melodic voice that's worthy of delivering a fairytale, but my one missing star is that the rhythm of how she delivers the lines gets a bit same-y. Still really enjoyed it.

Story: A locked-room horror mystery with a heavy dose of culture clash. If you're into the world building of Mass Effect, you'll have a lot to like as the lesser-focused species get their time on stage. The ending unsettled me, but it seems like it's supposed to. Not at all a light read, but turned my rides to work into no time at all.

Narration: I very much enjoyed Tom Taylorson as bro Ryder, and he knocked it out of the park here as an entire crew of varied voices talking to each other. There are a lot of sections of characters almost monologing, but he made it very easy to get drawn into those character moments. He hits the heavy spots with gravity without making them overwrought, and gives a nice wryness to the rare moments of levity.

A fun ride! Starts off a little slow, but once it got rolling I couldn't stop listening. It's more personal interactions with a touch of intrigue than The Martian, but you still get the sass and bits of falling in love with describing science. Jazz is a deeper character than she presents herself, and I wanted to know what had happened in her past to get her where she is, and where she was going to go.
Also a specific shout-out to Rosario's performance, it was fantastic. Feels like she's really Jazz sitting down to tell you her story over a pint. There's a wide cast of characters with many accents and she makes them all individual.

A book I'll definitely return to! Not only does Bailey fall in love, but she grows as a person, deals with trauma, and learns how to be a good friend & daughter. She has a whole world around her.
Also I really want to eat churros on the boardwalk now.
My main gripe with the narration is sometimes it's hard to tell whether Bailey is thinking something or saying out loud, which can be awkward, but usually you can figure it out from context.
Also don't judge it by its weird cover, which has nothing to do with anything.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would recommend it and I have! The text itself gives a lot of extra backstory and that they didn't get to lay out in the movie. Scenes were expanded, revealing things like how Raleigh was responsible for naming Danger. More characterization for the Russian and Triplet teams. Things about Pentacost's history. The voices are really well acted and unique for each character; it's like a one-man play.

What does Christian Rummel and Jay Snyder bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The voices are great, none of them stood out to me as awkward. Sometimes male readers make the female voices weird and/or breathy, and Mako made out pretty well in that respect. Having a different voice for the in-universe clippings or dossiers was a nice touch that helped them feel separate from the narrative.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

You do want to get through the plot, but it's not a breezy listen. There's a lot of info to chew on. I liked spreading it out over multiple listenings because I got to digest the new info I got and savor the new developments.

Any additional comments?

Sometimes the writing goes off on almost stream-of-consciousness tangents about what the characters are thinking, which slows down the pacing of the dialogue. But since a lot of the acting in the movie is shown on their faces rather than spoken, especially with Raleigh and Mako, it does help to hear what they might be thinking in those pauses. And the actor does a good job differentiating between what's spoken and what's thought.

Does a nice job filling in some of the motivations that the perhaps too subtle acting of the movie fell a bit short to convey.
Narration was good, he was very good at doing all the individual voices. My only gripe is how much weight he gave to absolutely everything; it is a downer sort of plot, but it did get exhausting sometimes.
