Pretty good, shame about the ending.
Revisado: 12-20-22
it was overall a rather nice sci fi story. I guess my one gripe with it is the ending is kind of a wet fart. It ends immediately after the climax basically without time for a proper resolution.

Good. Needs editing.
Revisado: 12-10-21
I liked this one but of the Dream Park series I think this one needs some more revisions. There are several times in the middle where what characters do and do not know change from scene to scene.

Historia
Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and, most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman, she's never met anyone remotely like the ship's diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot; chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running; and Ashby, their noble captain.

I like it but it is bad
Revisado: 08-17-21
For the record I have only heard this and the 2nd book (A Closed and Common Orbit). I think the author improved but this book is badly written. At least I think so. Oh it is nice to read and enjoyable but... Without spoiling, the first 75% of the book (everything before the climax) is what I mean. Every chapter is one of two things: Meeting character(s) or a reason to get a character's backstory. Or nearly every chapter. This book needs to be 3 or 4 times longer. I'm not just saying that because I want the author to continue their stories, I mean it because the details have no room to breathe. We need time to meet and like these characters first so their backstory has some actual impact. As it is they might has well just listed them when they are first introduced. On top of that, waaaaaaayyyy too much is told at us. Yeah, its a book but still. Let us infer things. A lot of the dialog feels less like people talking and more like puppets declaring their motivations.
Two notes about the performance. The editor left in a 'swap the CD' line, and I have never heard someone pronounce 'heretic' like the way Rachel Delude does here. Still good though.

Historia
Erik knew one thing after dropping in, when he first saw the numbers before his eyes, the rumors about the "cursed" were true. He was in another world. Survival wasn’t assured. Cultivate, get skills, grow abilities, or die. His old life, as a combat medic, had been hard, but he had learned some valuable lessons. And he wasn’t alone. His best friend, a marine recon sniper, like always, was right by his side. Could they figure out this fantasy world? What does it mean to ascend? How will they master the magic of this strange place?

a sloppy start
Revisado: 08-10-21
At time if writing this is the only book in the series I've listened to. It's not great, and I wont continue unless I can get the later books for cheap.
The setup is fine I guess. Makes sense soldiers would bring along all the guns they could. That all works. The world setup seems interesting and well developed. Its everything else that feels lame. There is too much boring nothing. There is also way way way too much exposition. This isn't an rpg manual. We don't need exact rules spelled out to us. We get pages on how magic works multiple times. And yet I can't tell you what the main characters look like apart from 'They are male and muscular'.
The books also need editing passes. Its a common failing of young authors to spam synonyms. That isnt the case here. Almost none are ever used which makes me wonder the author is a native english speaker or not.
The author draws some parts out and other times skips over them with no rhyme or reason.
Spoiler warning
For example, a big part of the 2nd half is the main duo leading a village in defending itself from monsters. We get chapters and chapters of prep, then like 2 of the actual battle. The story told us that there would be 5 waves of monsters. There are 2. No word on how or why that changed. Maybe the author got bored.
Later on we get like 3 chapters on city building that isnt important. Then when thats over they go to get murder-venge on someone who tried to kill them before (an event with plot lines that just got dropped). But they didn't actually know who did it, just the reader. Their learning is just skipped over when it actually could have been interesting.
In short the author needs to find a better balance between over and underexplaining things.

Memetastic and political
Revisado: 06-08-21
This book is fine for a brief listen but... I wouldn't call it good. The level of 'meme' is very annoying and the author blares his political views from a bullhorn. The voice is quite good though.

B.V. Larson needs a better editor
Revisado: 05-22-21
I enjoy this series quite a lot. but I must say this is the worst for story cohesion since Home World. More than once a plot thread is dropped, then reintroduced like it is a new thing with no connection to the earlier chapter. Established facts are forgotten from chapter to chapter. For example, James is ordered to do a rescue mission. Just one chapter later, he is going rogue to do the rescue. Like it wasn't an established thing he was to do. Whoever edited this needs to pay actual attention.

I've fairly well enjoyed this series. But there are issues. Whoever edited them, or approved this as the final version of both text and audio, should be ashamed. There are so many errors and mispronunciations. Really throws me out of the story. The author has promise but needs to revise their work more before calling it done.

All around sloppy
Revisado: 06-20-19
Never quit a book after only 4 hours before. Where to start... the narration seems sarcastically done, which is understandable given the content. The characters are inconsistant... It has only one remotely interesting plot point. The 'bad guy' has a legitimate reason to hate the protagonist and is actually sympathetic. Even if the author was too lazy to give proper names to his plot device motivation of a family. I can honestly say if Eye of Argon had seen an editor, its flow would be basically identical to this mess. Give it a hard pass.
'Spoilers' ahead.
Why do people in this fantasy setting know how volcanoes are formed, or about how to properly treat dehydration? They seem to have a deep understanding of science, despite having faced near extinction only 100 years ago.
Why does this fantasy world have 'villages' that seem to have thousands of people in them? That's city territory for their level of development.
Why does this book rip off the Wheel of Time? Not completely, but stop me if this seems familiar. An ancient method of fast travel, opened via a plant like covering, where time moves differently, it has been infected by an evil that is a danger to the soul. Oh, and they just dropped the 's' from the place name.
Do you like McGuffin plots? Do you hate consistant characters that even obey the flaws we are told of, like an acrophobic just climbing a wall? Do you love ham fisted exposition that drags on for minutes that could have been summarized, or broken up into bitesized flashbacks? Do you love literal deus ex machina? Then this is the book for you!

Leveling up would be amazing...if it weren't so deadly. They injected me with a VR chip, a GPS tracker, and my first Seed. They gave me unbelievable powers. Then they sent me to fight. The monsters here are alien and vicious. There is a second moon in the sky. I watched a tree start moving and kill someone. And the other Players? They're even worse. I’m alone. I’m weak. And I’m scared. But I will cling to life by the tips of my bloody fingernails. Who is behind this twisted game? If I want to survive, I have to get stronger. But can I do it before the Game kills me?
