Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Great voice acting, irritating production
Revisado: 04-03-19
While I loved the voice acting and thought the overall story was interesting and well done, there were a few things that made this hard to finish. The main character Diane was rather unlikable until the last chapter and I did not care for the way this was produced at all. The interruptions to announce the title, author, audible original, and episode number were annoying and unnecessary. The music breaks were too long and sometimes in odd places. While the atmospheric noises and altered audio for news/podcasts added a realistic tone, sometimes they made it difficult to hear clearly.

Great narration, but a struggle to finish
Revisado: 10-12-18
Loved the narration, but this book was a struggle to get through. The basic story was interesting up to a point, but there was so much of the book that I felt had nothing to do with the story. I just couldn't get interested in the political and religious debates and the characters seemed so emotionally unstable I found it hard to relate to them or see them as believable. The ending was very odd, and I found myself wondering what the point of this book was. I know some people love this book and find it fascinating, but it wasn't for me.

wonderful and haunting
Revisado: 08-04-18
We listened to this on a road trip because it was on my son's summer reading list and I think everyone was captured by the story. It was fascinating to hear so much of this time period I hadn't heard before and certainly made me look at the events in a more personal light. The story was beautifully written and is one I will keep thinking about for a long time.

Hmmm
Revisado: 03-27-18
I picked this book up after hearing it mentioned in another book, and I guess I was expecting something different. There wasn't really a story so much as a wandering account of the main character's life. The Buddhist concepts seemed rather vague and the narrator was difficult to listen to. I found myself struggling to get through it. I'm sure this is a great fit for some but it wasn't my cup of tea.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

great narrator, but difficult to get through
Revisado: 03-18-18
I had seen the movie previous to reading this, though it had been several years and the details were fuzzy in my memory. At times the meandering storyline and random side stories were a challenge to get through. It took me a good six months to finish listening. I kept expecting a bigger revelation or twist, but it never really happened.

Historia
One of the great fears many of us face is that despite all our effort and striving, we will discover at the end that we have wasted our life. In A Guide to the Good Life, William B. Irvine plumbs the wisdom of Stoic philosophy, one of the most popular and successful schools of thought in ancient Rome, and shows how its insight and advice are still remarkably applicable to modern lives. In A Guide to the Good Life, Irvine offers a refreshing presentation of Stoicism, showing how this ancient philosophy can still direct us toward a better life.

Revisado: 10-03-17
I really enjoyed this look at the history of stoicism and its practical use in modern day. The history sections were a bit long at times, but helpful in understanding were the philosophy came from. The advice on putting stoicism into practice was very useful and has me interested in learning more.
